Window goes up but then stops - help!

Hello:

I have had my 530i 2001 for a few months now and I am already starting to experience problems.

Today when I tried to roll the front passenger window up, it goes up, but then stops 4 inches short from closing. It sounds like it is getting stuck and there is a small cracking sound when it stops. What should I do? In the past I had a similar problem with my moon roof and someone on the forum taught me to reinitalize it and that fixed the problem. Can I also reinitialize windows?

Lastly, if I have to replace it how much should I expect to pay a mechanic for parts and labor?

Is it just me or does it seem like an extra special amount of newbie repeat questions are coming up from folks who didn't search?

To the OP, the window regulators have to be in the top ten most broken parts on the E39, so, nothing we say in this post will compare to what's already in the record.

Even though you said it's your passenger window, I'm going to refer you to this one thread for starters, because it has a lot of references in it (I did the work for myself, but you can leverage the results) and it has a LOT of pictures of every mundane detail (it's who I am).

- One user's experience with diagnosing the front left driver door window regulator (1)

It even has a video of the operation which you can learn from.

Happened to my rear left passenger. Get it fixed quickly and don't mess with the window. It's more than likely your window regulator, they go for around $100. If you mess around with the window while it's messed up you could end up with a nasty deep scratch on glass like me ): Labor shouldn't be that much depending on where you go.
