Since you've been a member here awhile, it is safe to assume that you ruled out each of the sounds described in detail in the "Sounds from the rear: Explained" sticky right?

Now have you jacked the car up and taken a look as to if anything even remotely looks wrong?
and if your answer is "I dont know what i would be looking at" then you may as well bring it to a mechanic since this is what will end up happening anyways.

Universal joints
Fixing e36 Driveshaft
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not a english major...Please forgive me . You absolutely "Can" replace Universal joints. e36 joints From the U joint store or Ebay .. E36. 430-11 is the size for my 98- 323is and 97- 328ic. The trick is tools . Burn the ujoints out with a torch .. alittle at a time (dont go crazy with the heat.) Press them out(normally. )That will leave you with the staked burrs. circle file them down .(Burrs) Emery cloth smooth. (Lightly) press them in. they will need to be centered in . This is where it sounds crazy but works perfect ,get $2.00 in quarters (Not silver) Press those into the yoke ends .(It will center them perfectly). Put a tack weld on outer ear of the yoke , leting the weld puddle down to the quarter.(On the thickest part of the circle)inner ear. Bmw shaft is balanced put marks everywhere so the shaft goes back exactly as it wwas . the front shaft also is splined exactly so put it back exactly on the same slpine . It Works ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by BimmerGary328i; Today at 04:57 PM.. Most of the time that's the issue. Put it up in the air and see if you can move the diff by hand. If not, leave it in the air and have a buddy "drive" it while you look to see what's moving.

[QUOTE=FenderBender;7091956]Diff bolt or bushings
This ^^ I've already dealt with this a few weeks back and a couple of months ago as well. It can be your diff bolts, mine was the front one (snapped in half and was a pain to remove) it can also be your center support bearing (when this goes bad it makes the driveshaft bang underneath the car) and if you don't fix it will do major damage like mine did (completely destroyed my trans output flange and driveshaft bearing)...lift up your car and inspect underneath ASAP!

Quote:
Did you align the driveshaft the way it was prior to removing? If you changed the csb and didn't align it the way it was it is not balanced correctly. Also check your flex disk, it sits on the trans output flange. It gets worn out and cracked after years of driving. If there are cracks on it it will start tearing apart.
