engine sounds like a diesel

I had my hood up and the engine running for an unrelated reason when I noticed that the engine sounds like a diesel. I do not know when this started because I normally drive with the windows down and music blasting so I would not have heard it. I have not noticed any idling problems since for has long as I owned the car. Does anyone know what could be causing my engine I would really appreciate any help.

I have always heard a Vanos issue described as marbles in the engine. But if that is what is wrong it is cheap enough fix. Thanks for the second set of ears Dino.

Doesn't sound that bad to me. I don't think you have any serious problems. I'm sure your VANOS could stand to be refreshed, but there's nothing major going on with your engine right now.

Yea, that doesn't sound that bad. Before I did the Beisan vanos refresh and anti rattle kit, my car sounded much worse. I would concur that you can not go wrong doing the refresh as you car is at that age when those seals are worn. You may also experience a slight increase in performance. Not difficult either.
