Yes, they were nice in the E60, which had 20-way seats (if you purchased that option).

I wonder why they downgraded them.

I sat in an M5 a couple of weeks ago. I love my Multi-Contour with Luxury seating seats, but the M5 takes them and adds the bolsters. They felt heavenly.

are you sure about that? the M5 crowd are up in arms about not having them (US version at least):

They do have bigger bolsters than the regular seats. Just not adjustable bolsters.

That said, I have found the M5 Comfort seats to be much more comfortable than the Regular Active seats. The best thing is that there is no gap when extending the seat cushion which reduce pressure on your sciatic nerve. It sounds trivial but to me makes a massive difference in comfort.
