diff fluid change

i have a 95 325i and i am looking to change the differential fluid along with the tranny fluid it is a manual and im just wondering what fluid i should use for the diff i have already decided swepco is probably the best for the tranny but not sure about the diff, what brand and what viscosity? thanks in advance.

I always use Redline 75w90 synthetic for the rear differential and Redline D4 ATF for the transmission.

Generally speaking, most BMW enthusiasts prefer Redline fluids for the trans & diff. That's what I would recommend, or perhaps Royal Purple products, which is what I have in my car. You'll have to verify ahead of time which kind of fluid your transmission takes, since there was some variation in the required fluid over the years. There should be a sticker on the side of your transmission. For the diff, you will need to determine whether or not your 325 has a limited slip differential before making a fluid choice. You most likely don't have an LSD, unless your car is equipped with the cold weather package and no ASC. If you do have an LSD, you'll need to make sure you choose a fluid with the appropriate friction modifiers. The viscosity for the diff should be 75w90.

I can't find either brand in any of the auto parts stores around would using mobil 1 or valvoline 75 w 90 be ok?

Mobil 1 will be fine, but I don't really care for Valvoline products. Keep in mind that if you replace the diff fluid, you will want to order two new aluminum crush washers (from the dealer or online, but they have to be OEM BMW parts), and you'll need to get your hands on (or make) a stubby hex tool to get the diff fill plug out (clearance is an issue, since the spare tire well is in the way - a standard hex tool will not fit). You'll also want a long breaker bar, since the plugs on the trans & diff can be on there pretty good.

Can castrol transmax import transmission fluid be used? It says its ok in bmw la2634 and lt71141

So any suggestion on a fluid for a LSD? How do I identify one that will work with said 'friction modifiers'?

You just have to buy fluid which is intended to be used with an LSD. Pretty easy, really.
