Drove my 1st 335d today.
I must admit that the low end torque is intoxicating. You just touch the gas and you get instant power. If I could go back 3 years, I'd have bought the 335d over my 335i.

Yes! The 335d is amazing and tons of fun!
The editor of BMW CCA magazine, Satch Carlson, is a self-appointed diesel critic who states in the latest issue that diesels are "not nearly as fun" as the new gasoline hybrid 3-series. He writes that the gas hybrid is basically equivalent to a regular 335i but with some extra horsepower. There is a diatribe in the same issue by Carlson on how he prefers manual transmissions, which has come up in the past in his criticism of the 335d. There is an article on the X535d in the same issue where even though it comes through how much fun the SUV was to drive, it seems the best any journalist can do is editorialize when writing about diesels - make it seem that it is a compromise and always feel the need to make excuses - not realizing that its just a different setup. If the standard car was diesel instead and someone came up with gasoline as an alternative, what would they say? Perhaps something like "gee, I miss the low end torque and feeling of power... and don't understand the point of paying more to travel fewer miles..." The fun factor? Its a matter of opinion, but we diesel folks find the low end grunt as appealing as the burbling V8 motors of Detroit iron. I think they are actually making excuses for the gasoline versions given how surprisingly great the diesels are! I'm letting my membership expire. Tired of the BS and bias. PL

Sach towing the BMW line of hybrids only. BMW spent lots of money on this technology and they're not going to let their diesels steal the show in the U.S. |

I made this comment long ago but I think it is a typical US BMW lover for the "high rev" power an gasoline inline six makes. So something more specific to low end without that high end surge feels "wrong". I don't agree with this being a valid thought to have but have actually read journalists voice it before.
