Need expert Wheel advice

I have a 2011 550ix m-sport.

I am thinking of changing the summer wheels and tires to 18' due to the bad roads where I live.

I have a set of winter tires that are 245/45/18 and are on Style 350 rims that are 8 inches wide - part number 36117842650

I want to change the summer wheels and tires to 18" also.

My question is do I go with 8" or 9" wide? BMW style 350 18" comes on both sizes - Does it matter???? The original wheels that came with the car ( style 351) are 8.5" wide.

Would the tire size be different?

sdg1871 who lives in NYC kept his 19" wheels and upsized his tires to 245/45R19 to provide more cushion. He has been problem free, so that is a good way to go.

If you still want to go to 18" and are going with non-RFTs, a narrower rim setup will 1) provide a softer ride, 2) have more sidewall flex in turns, 3) provide more protection from siewall scrapes, and 4) weigh a smidge less. A wider rim setup will have the opposite effect. If you are familiar with a tire's characteristic then you can size your rim to match your tire set-up. As an example, my 335d has Conti DWS which is soft tire, so I picked wider rims to maximize cornering performance. As far as RFTs are concerned, I'm not sure if the old rules of thumb apply or not.

Thats interesting. So instead of 18" with 45 profile tires , I could go with 45 instead of 40 in side wall with my 19" rims ?. I wonder which would be better?

I believe the 350 wheels come in two widths because they are using them staggered in Europe, 8 in front and 9 in the rear. In US all Xdrive are same width all round.
