What has been your best MPG/range on your X3

Wife's X3 gets 21-26 in-town to highway.

Exactly my question too! My trip computer is .5 - .7 optimistic versus my calculator using odometer miles and gallons burned.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to track my mileage each time I fill up, kind of like your fuelly.com site. But I've found the onboard computer is pretty accurate if I reset it at the time of fill-up.

Like spokelizard, I maintain a spreadsheet and do the actual calculations at each fill-up. I also compare my calculations to the computer and have found that, ON AVERAGE, the computer is 0.1 mpg LOWER than my "actual" calculation. And this is over 48k miles worth of data.

I must be enjoying the drive, and have a lead foot 16 mpg winter driving and short trips.
I hope it gets better.. I will see this summer when I get some longer trips in.

It's interesting to hear that the petrol versions are similar to my 3.0 sd oil burner. I'm getting 12.3km/l or around 28mpg on a 1300k trip at an average of 103 km/h and 10.3km/l around town. Great thing with the sd is, when you want to exercise your right foot you've got 210KW and a ship load of torque.

Best so far, 362 miles. (Two weeks ago)

2008 Premium Package, Automatic, Mix of City/Highway, around 50,000 miles, Last oil change in January.

Whoever comes out with the first compact diesel SUV and/or wagon will probably make some good revenue. I mean, given the success of larger diesel SUVs in the US, the demand is there........but I think the sticking issue will be whether Americans are willing to pay a premium for a small SUV. It'll likely cost well into large SUV territory and generally Americans shop along price points; they don't see the value of a smaller package if it costs more than a larger package.

The problem is that small SUV/wagons in diesel do exist, just not in the US. Exceptions the X5, ML, Audi A3/Q7, and VW (Jettas and Touareg). With the VW/Audi (except for the Q/Touareg), they only import the smaller 140 HP engine, not the 170 that the EU gets.

Still, diesel sales are less than 6% in the US. But is that due to the lack of choices?

18.6 mpg city 23.2 highway (80-85mph)

3.0 automatic 55,xxx miles

best range I have got was 420 miles (I literally ran out of gas lol) from Lawton, OK to Little Rock AR in my 04 2.5.....I get around 24 if it is constant highway driving with the cruise, but only about 18in mixed driving, sitting in traffic, etc.

I haven't driven the X3 diesel myself, but as a passenger in both E83 2.0d and F25 2.0d, I have been disappointed. It's noisy, and IMHO has too much low frequency vibrations that resonates with the chassis. Granted the milage is better than that of my N52 petrol six, but it still isn't worth it for me.
Actually the best 4 cylinder diesel I have tried is the Mercedes 220CDI. For a diesel, an absolutely amazing engine, both in the GLK and E-class.

Ok, I did a quick test this morning on my way to work and tried to get my best MPG (without over doing it)

I reset the speed and MPG on the OBC as soon I got in the Interstate, drove 22 miles and averaged 73 MPH:

Got 26.7 MPG

Reset OBC again when I exited the highway, drove 2 miles averaging 33.7 MPH:

Got 17.5

So I guess these are my best numbers so far.

I like seeing how low I can get my fuel consumption, although I don't keep the BC display on the average (it's too depressing to watch- I just use the instant consumption readings). When conditions are appropriate, I also stop-start the engine at long stops and have been doing so for years.

Can't say I an eco-mentalist but I do what I can to save fuel and my chequebook (and reduce CO² emissions). It's always depressing to think of how far technology has progressed. The M5 is more eco-friendly than my X3 and makes 3x the power.

These are all great numbers but i'd like to see people put year, transmission, and engine in their posts. This way we can compare apples to apples.

Anyone driving a 3.0 2004 manual with redline or amsoil in the transaxle and rear diff? This will be my preferred setup when I find one that is the right price.

2009 3.0 si with 6sp auto. 80k on odometer...Toyo turevo ls 2 tires and non sport package 17 in wheels and tires.

22.8 over six months biased toward highway, but combined with city. Fwy only 24 mpg city closer to 20.

2006 X3 3.0 sport package 5 speed auto with 18" Pirelli Scorpions. Averages 19.3 mpg over 65,000 miles.

I have Redline in my diffs. Need BMW fluid for transfer case. Only source for that (at least for my year).

I did a drive from Chapel Hill to Clemson SC today. I had to refuel at my usual place off NC-49 in Denton NC and reset the BC from there. Also compared that with some maths; fuel gauge makes it appear I consumed 25 litres over 308km (190 miles).

The BC read an average cons. of 8,2 l/100km (28,7 US mpg) and average speed of 96,9km/h (60,2mph) for the journey. Confirmed with manual calculations. Up to the point I got on the interstate and hit Charlotte's bad drivers, I got the figure shown below, over 30 US mpg. And I'm still not very satisfied......my expectations are just that high!

No, I was driving my normal way, efficiently and usually still overtaking most people on the interstate. And hitting 140-150km/h briefly on the Spartanburg Bypass.

I'm impressed! Problem in California is you get pushed off the roads going that speed. I have noticed the mpg sweet spot is around 70 to 73 mph.

On the interstates outside Charlotte I kept it around 120-130km/h. Traffic wasn't light because it was Fri afternoon after 16:00. There's a lot of traffic that flows between Greenville SC and Charlotte.

Time to resurrect this...

My average fuel economy has slightly improved and I am averaging 23 mpg with an 80/20 bias toward highway.

This week I had a new F30 with the N20 4 cylinder as a service loaner. I averaged 34 mpg in Eco pro mode and got 515 miles on a tank of gas and never felt power was compromised. I was impressed.
