Red face Check engine light on the way to Death Valley

Hi,

I am on my way to Death Valley and check engine light came up. No power loss or anything unusual with the engine. Is it safe for engine to continue the trip? What can I do to minimize risk of major failure?

And one more thing - I think the light came up when crossing Yosemite via Tioga Rd (high altitude). I thought that maybe there was problem with fumes due to low level of oxygen or sth...

Thanks!

Kanar

you are fine. Red Engine light stop IMMEDIATELY. Not "next station", not "when you can pull over in the shade".... Pull off, turn it off.

Good Luck

I just drove the Tioga Pass in my X5 a few weeks ago... stunning. Have you ever been to Death Valley? Bring water.

It will be my first time to the DV. I have been to 12 different US national parks (including four times to Yosemite) since I moved to the US one year ago. DV will be number 13

It is hell for humans, and hell for cars (the reason why automakers test out there). Almost half of the BMWs I have been out there in go into a "limp mode" when they overheat and shut off the A/C... sucks!

So, I shouldn't bring my kids along the next time I visit Cali?

I just ran our '07 X5 across US 395 from Lee Vining to San Diego without incident. It was 95-102 all the way across the Owens Valley and Mojave desert. We do this a couple times a year, and have never had an overheating condition. And we have been across Tioga more than once with it. No problems ever. Anecdotal I know, but I've never had an issue with the altitude.

BMW should have better cooling then (since they test in Death Valley)

I drove about 2 hours through this heat a couple of weeks ago - super cool inside the car and no adverse effects from it.

Hi,

The check engine light was gone after 40-50 miles…. I will ask SA when I bring the car to the service which code it was. Fortunately, I did not have any problem with the car in Death Valley.

I experienced the same temperature as 1HOT BMR

Thanks
kanar

I have just picked up the car from the oil service. I asked them to put the fault code on the work statement - the code is DME FC46EB ("reducing agent fill plausability"). Currently not present. Not sure whether they meant "plausibility" anyway, I do not understand what it means

If you search for "46EB" and "BMW" you will see this is the result of a confusing reading of the DEF level- IMO the sensor and the internal DME tracking of the level is off, and trips a code. (Hence, implausible)

I'd only worry if it returned.
