1995 BMW 525i auto trans selector heat seizure

Hello to you all, I am a new member and hope that someone among you can help me.
I have a 1995 BMW 525i auto sedan without air-con that I have owned for the past 14 years. Due to being offered a company car (Yuk) I dry stored the car in clean and relatively warm conditions undisturbed for the past 6 years.
I have now retired and want to re-commission the car. All was good when I laid the car up but now I have a problem with the auto gear selector becoming very stiff and even seized after just a few miles of driving.
I would really appreciate any suggestions, particularly as I need the car to make daily visits to hospital for my cancer treatment.

Welcome aboard !

Over the years, I`ve seen more than a dozen similar cases where the cause of the problem was a coin or two which had slipped down into the shift linkage, jamming things up. Remove the shift boot, and inspect closely with a flashlight.

Your car is an E34, so any future questions should be directed to the E34 Forum.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
The linkage is clear of obstructions, in fact I disconnected the linkage from the gearbox end and the selector moved freely. After I replaced it the selector moved freely as before because the transmission was cold. After a 3 mile drive the whole thing had almost completely jammed. On removing the linkage again it all freed up until I re-connected it again. The fault is obviously in the box, maybe with an oil cooler or thermostat if fitted. If there is a cooler and stat could you please tell me where they are located. Many thanks.
