which hydraulic system?? power steering?? if so, what sort of noise(s) are you experiencing??
also, are these noises more common when the engine is 'cold' (ambient temps) or warmed up (operating temps)?? df

Olha esse link: http://www.dvatp.com/bmw/diy/power_steering_flush/ drivinfaster: I translated your questions--which I would have asked, too, and answered his about the correct fluid (Dexron III) and gave him a link on how to flush. I also told him about the filter in the reservoir and that the whole thing should be changed with the fluid. I'll keep an eye on this thread and make sure language does not prevent us from helping him out. Last edited by TheDurk; 10-06-2012 at 07:13 PM. |

obridago (that's correct, right??)
knew they spoke portuguese and not spanish, but i don't speak either. and google translate is not exactly what i would feel confident in using for this sort of translation. kinda cool, though, to have different languages on board. thank you for your help. df edit, sounds like he may be low, which would indicate a leak. any stiffness in the wheel, or binding then looseness felt?? what color is the fluid?? if dark grey with possibly metalic particles, a new rack and system flush would be in order as this indicates a worn rack. upgrading to the z3 rack would give a shorter lock to lock ration for a bit more performance.

This is a better translator than Google translate, but it still struggles with technical terms.....

So we have established that the fluid is pretty dark, because the fluid in the picture in the link doesn't look that great and his is darker. The noise comes when it is hot and he goes lock-to-lock and to us the sound is more like: "eeeeeennnnnnyoooooh, allowing for the differences in how the letters sound. We'll see how he answers the other questions. I wonder if a clogged filter could cause fluid starvation and thus nasty noises even if the level is good? I've done a lot of work on my cars but steering has rarely caused me any trouble other than rack bushings and tie rod ends. Last edited by TheDurk; 10-06-2012 at 08:36 PM. |

I wonder if someone put regular power steering fluid in instead of ATF? It reacts with the ATF and turns pretty dark and it's also a higher viscosity and doesn't flow well in the BMW system.

Well, he didn't answer the questions. He just said he's going to do a fluid change and see what happens. Can't hurt.

True, and it'll address my question by default.

But you're right, there could be anything in there. If that car has been in Brazil since new--likely because importing used is only for diplomats--it goes back to a time when auto transes were almost unknown. Brazilians had a deep distrust of auto transes for a long time--as well as 4-door cars, which I always found bizarre. GM was to blame for that, I believe.
So they may well have thrown PS fluid in there at some point as ATF just wasn't around. Last edited by TheDurk; 10-07-2012 at 02:01 PM. |
