7 Series - E65 / E66 (2002 - 2008)
Discussion of BMW's 4th generation E65/E66 7 Series flagship. The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2005 facelift.

oil dipstick

Is there a way to check oil beside the IDrive report?
I could not find a dipstick nor does the manual provide for a dipstick?
Thats a lot of trust in the electronics not to have a dipstick.

What year is your 7? I have an '03 and there is a dipstick.
Can you tell me how to check the oil level in i-drive?

I think its in the Idrive car data. Upper right diagonal with Idrive knob to select "car data" on my car.
There is a menu and one of the items is a oil can. Select it and it displays an oil reseviour and the level of oil in the car. Of course, it will give you a dash warning if oil gets low without having to check manually.

Maybe im old fashioned, but would have liked a dipstick as fail-safe and to occasionally look at the color of the oil.

Perhaps the BMW theory is that 750 owners are such upper crust that there would never be a reason for them to check the oil with a dip stick.

Wrong. It's on the driver side rear of the engine.

I dont think I have that option.. Only shows the mileage for next oil change.

There is a dipstick for the oil only in the engine bay. To the right. There is no dipstick for the tranny fluid. The I-Drive only tells you when to change the oil (do not follow). Change your oil every 5K-7K max if you plan on keeping your vehicle. Never trust the 15K recommendations from the dealers and I-Drive. Some people like 10K, but remember how expensive these cars can be. If you change your own oil, you can get away with about $50 per oil chane. That is 3 oil changes for the same as the dealer charges for one oil change. Easy to do.
