E90 milleage

One of my buddies purchased a 2011 328i automatic from BMW of BH four months ago with only 3,500 miles on the clock.

The sticker says 19 city, 29 highway. H is driving a mix and getting less than 15. In the city he is getting only 13.

The dealer says that is the way it is. Are they correct? Thanks

From my exp. with a 328 loaner you really have to give it gas to get it to do anything special, so if he's flooring it his milage will tank, if he coasts and want to get up to speed his milage will tank, this isn't the case with higher hp cars where you can get up so quick and coast. Maybe somethings wrong, but that would be my first guess(also traffic conditions play a huge factor)

I get 25.5-28.9 with my 335x

That city number doesn't sound too bad if he's winding it up and/or wasting a lot of time sitting at lights.

In highway driving 60~75mph I can easily get into the mid 20s.

Sounds low. I drive mostly highway, though some of it is bumper to bumper. I average about 23 mpgs. That number would be closer to 28 if I didn't have so much stop and go traffic.

When I was still driving mostly a 50/50 mix of city and highway I averaged about 21 mpgs. If you average 13 in the city you must be racing from stop light to stop light!

Highway 60-75 should yield closer to 30 and above than mid-20s, unless there is a lot of elevation or your car is packed to the gills. I run to Austin/Houston every once in a while usually going 75-80 and I consistently get 30 and above.

It depends on the driving conditions. He is in LA which of course is known for heavy traffic. If his drive takes him on the 101 near downtown or creeps along Sunset, Wilshire or the like I can see the poor mileage. My MT E90 328 gets 21 in the city but I'm in Detroit where we don't see a lot of stop and go traffic.

Good point. I am in heavy traffic but I'm sure it is nothing compared to the east-cost/west-coast rush hour madness.

Of course, then the OP should already be used to not trusting the posted numbers.

That's better than I get, 328's are not known for getting good gas mileage. I know why mine sucks I'm having fun every time I drive!

LA traffic is pretty insane at times. I travel to both LA and Dallas and have not found Dallas traffic to be terrible but the downtown area has some nasty congestion where all the freeway's meet. I'll be there this week as a matter of fact.

32on the highway doing 65. In summer. Not so good in winter. 21. Mix.

I truly am sorry for that. You might enjoy the weather though. We had our first cold spell yesterday with overnight low 40s, some areas even high 30s. When I left the house it was about 50F and the weather person advised to take gloves.

With about 30~40% highway driving and little heavy traffic, my '07 MT 328i wagon averages almost 24 mpg overall. Highway only is close to 30 although A/C drops it down to about 28.

My predominantly surface street (residential 25-30mph) short hop trips yields me currently 17 mpg with an overall average over nearly two years of data collection 19.4 mpg. This is with a 328i 6MT E93 (heavy car - lots of AC usage worst case scenario driving) and the hard to resist daily chance to do a little "italian tune up".

I've learned to live with it. Every few months or so I make sure I can give it a good airing out. Always does wonders for my mpg!

My 335XI gets really good gas mileage. I mean I can do a 120mile trip at 31mpg. Around town I get 19-21 and my cars got to be well warn in at 136,000 miles

In the city I get about 15mpg but I have an IS model. I don't think mpg should be an issue...enjoy the BMW, if you are looking at saving gas you probably bought the wrong car...

The best that I've received on mine is 30 mpg after resetting the mpg calculator and taking an 8-hour trip from LA to Mammoth Lakes earlier this year. A lot of "steady state" driving with cruise control. My usual 'short trip' driving results in about 18 mpg around town.

My best ever with a BMW was 33 mpg with my E46 M3 on a trip to Las Vegas (little elevation change). God bless the S54 engine and 6 MT! My return trip mpg wasn't as good as I "opened it up" wanting to escape LV as soon as possible.

We wear shorts and t-shirts until it gets into the 40's where I'm from. This is a heat wave. It was 27 when I left this AM.

I have a '10 328 Coupe with MT. On a 6000+ mile cross-country trip two summers ago, my overall average was 32+ mpg. A/C was on more than 50% of the time. I did get 36+ mpg between Blue Ridge, Ga. and Wytheville, Va., though I don't know why.
Also, I managed to get the mpg down below 10 mpg driving the Tail of the Dragon - highlight of my trip.
