Looking into e46's! New BMW guy! Hello all

Hello all, the name is Blake, new to the forum, I have a 2006 Mustang (daily driver) and a 2002 Honda s2000 (usually weekend car) the mustang has 49k miles and the honda has around 103k, Anywho I'm from Alabama, looking into selling my cars and getting a 2004 or 2005 E46 BMW M3 not sure which year is the best, I know I do want the SMG transmission, I like the Competition package with the 19" wheels, bigger front rotors etc. Are there any majoy differences between the 2004 and 2005 models? I'm looking at two BMW's right now one is a 2005 with 54k miles it's black($24000) and the other is a 2004 with 37k miles and it is blue ($29000) I'm not to sure which once of these are better, I was kinda going towards the Black one, all input taken into appreciation!

-- Here is the first one-- 2004, Black, 57k Miles,

-- Second one-- 2005, Blue, 37k Miles,

I don't believe there's any fundamental differences between the '04 and '05 models. All things being equal, I'd personally lean toward the later model year with fewer miles, but you gotta go with the one you like... As with all BMW's, mileage isn't as important as the maintenance history; if the one with the higher mileage has a more comprehensive maintenance history, that should influence your decision accordingly. And incidentally, I suspect that the vehicle listed as "black" is actually Carbon Black, which is a actually a very, very dark blue; if you want a conventional black color on your M3, you might need to search a little more.

Before purchasing either vehicle, you'll want to research the forum for some of the potentially expensive problems, like VANOS failures (screws backing out) and subframe cracks. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified independent BMW mechanic or BMW dealer is highly advisable.
