E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135. |

Help:(
Hey guys i have a 2008 128i and have had some concerns. Ive read a ton of information on the web about the infamous valve tap. Ijust bought my 128 a month ago from an euthisiast who babied the car. I have noticed recently that the car can have valve tap, but it is completely random. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt. Weather doesnt affect it at all, or whether the engine is warm or cold.
I have attatched a youtube video of my car for you guys to listen to. I need some opinions/thoughts on what i should do. What is bmws valve train warranty? Any help is appreciated. thank you! |

If you're still under a warranty (original or CPO), definitely take it back to the dealer and have them repair it. This sounds to me a lot like a relatively common problem with the N52 engine and its lifters -- although yours sounds more pronounced than others I've heard.
This problem gets discussed pretty regularly on the E83 X3 sub-forum (the 128i and the E83 X3 share the same N52 engine); in fact, here's a recent thread on the topic. The fourth posting in that thread (by "jdauria") covers the essence of what's going on pretty well, as well as what measures BMW will take to rectify the problem. Good luck!
