Bluetooth Setup
I have a 2006, X3 that I bought two years ago as a certified used car. When I bought the car I was told that is was bluetooth ready. However, at the time I did not have a bluetooth compatable phone.
I have recently purchased a phone with bluetooth and when I went to the dealers to have programmed they now tell me the my car is bluetooth wired but it doesn't have a TCU. The dealer is now telling me that it will cost me $1000.00 to purchase and install the components I need. My question is, if the car is already wired for bluetooth, what are the components I need other than a TCU to get my phone working? Also, what model TCU do I need? Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Jim Fox |

Does your car have the premium package?
What about BMW assist? In the very back in the left side, pull the cover panel and look to see what boxes are installed. There will be a black box back there if you have bt module installed and there will be a code label on it. If its there. Unplug the cable, wait ten minutes and plug it back in. It may be that if its there it needs a reset. It was an issue with the 06s.

I couldn't get my phonebook to work until I changed phones, now all is good. I think some phones won't load the phonebook.

I would check Ebay for a TCU or ULF. Mine came with a TCU that didn't have Bluetooth just BMW Assist. I replaced it with an ULF and added a pairing button. It works great. Here's a link for the Bluetooth installation:

The silver box looks like a TCU. You may want to try the Bluetooth forum:

You could always disconnect the battery and wait ten minutes and then connect it And try again.
I do know the X3s were very picky about the phones that it would sync with.

The TCUs and ULFs are the same on all BMWs. The guy that moderates that forum really knows his stuff. You should post on there.
