2004 bmw x3
I'm getting code P0174 - any idea what this code is?

I think that one means you are running lean...most likely has to do with a crack in the intake boot behind the MAF sensor, but could be something else with the intake. Odbii codes are universal and don't pinpoint specific failures. Also if it is the intake, after replacement you will have to clear the code...it won't go away automatically.
Any other symptoms, noises or other codes? |

Agree with x3brian, probably the intake boot. Well known issue on the X3...had same code last year on our 04 X3, replaced intake boot...fixed.

Took it to my bmw guy - it read the same code along with bad gas cap. My guy told me to replace gas cap and see how things go...

Nothing in particular just curious if drivability has changed since MIL got activated.
Interesting. That code has more to do with intake than gas cap. I know my 09 has a separate dash light when the BMW gas cap code gets thrown. Keep us updated if problem comes back. Last edited by x3brian; 10-05-2012 at 09:39 PM. |

I had that code and my intake book was cracked at the bellow part and my crank vent system was bad.

My '06 also has a separate light for the gas cap.

New gas cap and reset check engine light - all is well so far.

With mine it was MAF sensor. Cleared the code but it came back weeks later. I removed and cleaned the air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor with cleaner I got from Auto Zone.

Yeah the code will most likely come back in 60-100 miles

You could probably change the intake boot yourself, but if not it should take <1hr of labor.

If it is the intake boot how long could I go before getting it fixed - 7-10days?

If its just a tear in the rubber intake boot you should have time. Your engine may run lean and waste some gas, but its not dangerous IMO.

intake boot is fairly easy to fix, you might bang up your knuckles trying to get that stupid plastic splash guard in and out. Biggest PITA is taking off the cabin filter housing

If the code hasn't come back in more than 200 miles, I wouldn't worry about it. The intake boot probably is fine and it just needed a new gas cap. The gasket around it develop cracks and dries out letting pressure escape from the tank.

+1. Don't worry about it unless the code comes back. This is minor in the grand scheme and really only impact mpg/idle.
