Vanos or water pump?

Just got this noise on my 540 and I'm pretty worried any suggestions on how to diagnose it

I'll try load up a video once I figure out how

Does it sounds like this?

If so it the famous VANOS rattle. I have the same noise and I know its not the waterpump because its only a year old.

Got a video of it, it sounds like this, (video indicates an exhaust leak type sound but it is much harsher than this and definitely not from the exhaust)

had the coolant sensor come up and toppoedit up with water and now this making me think it was the waterpump. it seems that if i squeeze the hoses on either side of the pump there is some slight noise.

If it is vanos is it urgent to have it fixed or can i still drive the car?

Sounds like a water pump from the discription. Take a long srew driver or something like that and put it against the water pump while it it running ( being very careful ) put your ear to it and listen. You should be able to tell by how loud the noise is.

There you go John - good old timers method of checking out noises/sources of noise will work on these hi tech cars too.

Sounds like water pump (bearing inside pump). I had same noise, then my alternator stopped working (watercooled in 540). After I replaced the alternator belt and pulleys, noticed excessive vibration on cooling fan, too late....... Had I paid more attention the first time I heard the noise. It was the pump (bearing gave up), causing bad coolant circulation. Anyway, I went ahead and replaced the entire cooling system. Lesson learned. Car has 91250 miles.
