rust on roof rails not covered ?! (runt)
After 18 months of ownership (lease) and 20K kms on the odo of my 2011 X5 I noticed a "bubble" on the driver side of the black roofrail about 1 inch round. While at the dealer for oil change I pointed out the problem to them and they took several pictures of the rails and I was told that they would be send to BMW along with a report of the problem. A few weeks went by so I called back to find out when they would fix the problem as the bubble was getting bigger only to be told that BMW doesn't cover the rail rust as they are considered "accesories" and not part of the body to be covered under the rust warranty !!!! When I "strongly objected" to their answer I was told that desicions regarding warranty repairs come from the BMW (Canada ?) head office and the dealer has to comply !! Thank God it's a lease and it will not be my problem a year from now - I made sure the whole "fiasco" is docymented and in my and their files - but had I paid 70K+ for that car it would be very upsetting ! Maybe it's time to look at MB !!

Did YOU read the warranty? Do YOU have a legal basis for disagreeing with their 'decision'?
I'd object on the grounds that this failed under the regular 4 year 'defect' warranty and NOT under the 'rust warranty'. It isnt rust. It is a mfg defect- they failed to fully coat the metal, there was some porosity, the metal has corroded. Who gives an F, its a rental. Is it worth the hassle for you? I'd write a demand letter to BMW, citing the warranty language and the law- but prolly take it no further. A

As a side note, don't lose sleep on this one - if I had a lease I wouldn't even be washing the damn thing! Enjoy that couldn't care less approach that all rental car drivers should embrace!

Oh man, you couldn't have said it any better. I used to be OCD with the cars I owned and kept them squeaking clean... and then I started leasing and my cars are now lucky if they see the car wash once or twice a year (that's what rain is for, isn't it?)!!! Nothing cures car OCD like leasing.
