chain noise from front of the engine 0n 3.0i

sounds like a worn timing chain but noise stops when auto box is put in neutral or park
and does not notice at speed,does not appear to be affecting the gearbox at all, the car
has done 101,000 miles the noise appears to be heard from the front of the engine only

thanks in anticpation for any ideas about this andy
