Surface rust isn't covered, as it normally doesn't pose a problem (e.g., on control arms, etc...).

"Lifetime" meaning how long you own the car or 100,000 miles. I suspect in any case driving through the surf for 14 klicks on the way to a beach house might just void any such warranty!

Actually this beach has been designated a Hwy to which all road rules apply. From Noosa North Shore onto Double Is Point then to the Township of Rainbow Beach some 60klm in length.

If a vehicle breaks down on this section and is under warranty then any Vehicle Assist agreements must be honoured, it it not classified as off-road, all insurance policies apply also.

There would be less salt on the beach than the winter salted roads the US & Europe which does far more damage.

Actually, you will notice the cliffs in the sand dunes behind the X1, the tide at the moment is coming right up to the dunes?

So then I guess the warranty and road service agreements will still be in effect for the X1 assuming it is still there when the tide goes out.

I have the X5d and I have never driven a Cayenne Diesel but I drove the 2013 Cayenne GTS with the V8 a couple of days ago - my first Cayenne test drive ever. I like my 35d much better in ride, handling and power curve/delivery for every day driving. The interior of the Cayenne is far superior in elegance, quality of materials and just beautiful to look at - on everything else I like my X5d much better, especially the ride handling with AD and non run flats. My guess is that the engine power/delivery for the Porsche diesel must be similar but the handling and ride are most likely worse. BTW, the sticker on that GTS was 104K!

I loved my 2011 X5 35d and I loved my 2012 X5 35d. My 2013 Cayenne Diesel is in a different class..More refined in every way Paint ..Interior.. Handling.. Fuel consumption.. Quiet...Fun to drive....Paid $56895.00....I look forward to going back to BMW X5 35d if they get the new design right...BMW should FIRE whoever is in charge of the seating design and materials. Just my opinion...

You paid $56,895 for Cayenne Diesel? That's a great price. Where did you get it and what packages did it include?

Included Nav. sun roof ..Porsche Xeon lighting pkg. soft ruffld seats. speed sens. steering Conv.Pkg..MSRP was $63105.00 paid $56895.00

I ordered it July 12 and took delivery Nov.12.. Probably can't make the same deal now,because of the demand. Find a small dealer in a small town to make the best deal..

I have a really tough time with this statement. I spent a good deal of time borrowing my buddies Cayenne S and it was head and shoulders better than my X5 in ride, handling and power curve/delivery. It wasn't even close really. I know that the GTS outperforms the regular S easily so your comments seem way out there. The only area that the X5 is significantly better is that it's cheaper.

Let me suggest a possible explanation: My 2012 X5 35d has Adaptive Drive and normal Pirelli Scorpion Verde 19" tires. The ride of MY X5 is definitely better than the Cayenne GTS I drove, and that one had normal tires (I asked and was told that Porsche does not do run flats) and 21" wheels. The handling part is simply the roll of the Cayenne that my X5 does not exhibit plus the extra light steering at low speeds that felt unnatural to me - perhaps exacerbated by the heavy steering of the X5 at low speeds. As far as the power curve/delivery for every day driving it is simply that. My X5 has tremendous torque at low rpm and the Cayenne GTS does not. When approaching the Golden Gate south on 101 there is a long climb where the GTS had to hit 4000 rpm before it started pulling and my X5 feels like there is no hill at all - it pulls that hard at just about anything over idle. Lastly I have never owned BMWs in my life until now because I always thought they were overpriced cars with cheap interiors and subpar paint jobs so there goes the possible fan*** reason for my comments

I'm friends with Dan (the author). That said, I'm going to accuse him of jumping on his "badge-engineering vortex" a bit too late. Porsche and Volkswagen have shared powerplants for decades... the Cayenne has always had a Volkswagen engine in its entry-level models (the Cayenne Diesel is considered entry-level). Why start bitching now?

I'd take the Cayenne Diesel over the Cayenne V6 in a heartbeat. But, I'd take the BMW X5 35d over both.

I find this rather surprising but I never have driven a GTS since quite honestly never could bring myself to pay so much for an SUV. I can easily see though how the X5d low entering and peaking torque would be magnitudes better for such situations. But I'd thought a GTS had an aggressive power band to it that would not make it such a "slug" in that situation.

Amazing! There must have been something wrong with the GTS. 4k before it started to move up the waldo grade (that's the long hill before you get to the tunnel going south on the 101 toward SF)? Never had that happen to any car I have driven up that hill. My old Tahoe stormed up that thing without breaking a sweat and the Cayenne V6 I drove up there (thanks Sonnen!) handled it just fine with no gear hunting. I wanted to try the Cayenne diesel but they were not handing those out for test drives then. I was impressed with the V6 though, had more oooomph than I remembered from the old series engine. Probably the 8 speed box.

Cayenne GTS will run circles around an X5 35d, at any speed.

The GL is very nice and large. A little too big when comparing against BMW X5 or Cayenne.

One grip I had with the cayenne diesel is that the adaptive anti roll bar is not available for diesel. I tried their website numerous times and could not find it. The ML does have the option which made the ML more interesting. In the end I chose BMW because it has best combination of price and sporty feel.

After waiting for BMW X5 for 5 weeks, I know what I won't be able to wait for an European build SUV. It's just take too long.

ah, the GTS isn't a 425 ft/lbs torque monster diesel so that is pretty much the answer here. Really no mystery at all.
