Homelink Programming for rolling code openers...

I spent an hour on this so hopefully this watered down instruction set for folks w/ rolling code openers will save some others some time (or i'm just a *()&* for not figuring it out to begin with!).

Step By Step:
1) w/car on or in accessory mode, press outer homeline buttons for appx 20 seconds until homelink light goes from solid to flashing slowly. Once flashing slowly, release both buttons.

2) take an existing remote control, press the button on homelink you want to program along with a button on the existing remote (any button on the remote is fine - it doesn't matter so long as the remote's button works), keep both buttons pressed for appx 20 seconds until the homelink light flashes quickly, then release both buttons.

3) go to your garage opener, press the learn button

4) go to your home link button and press it several times. I know the instructions say appx 3x, but my garage opener saw it after the first press. As you press it - you should start seeing your opener going up/down - at this point, the button is programmed.

For the 2nd & 3rd homelink buttons - go to step 2 and repeat.

Keep pressing the home link at the end, it took me 15 times at least

Only took me 3 min to do all the cars for over 10 years now.

Aceman's instructions are right on. Where was he several years ago when I was beating myself up trying to figure it out??

Any idea how to program Homelink if you have an older garage door opener that does not use rolling codes and you no longer have the remote control? I know the frequency it uses.

I tried at least 5 times and mine will only flash fast. Any ideas? TIA!

On step 4, it took 20-30 times pressing the button for the door to move, don't give up after 5 tries.

For step 4 you are supposed to hold down the home link button until the door moves. I have been doing it that way since the 90's...

Am I the only one who didn't have to press the learn button? All I needed was my existing remote.

They are rolling code too....

I initially had the same problem programming the Homelink with my garage opener. I was very frustrated with the written instructions in the manual. After many unsuccessful attempts at it, I went to the BMW website and found a video that explains how to program it correctly. After watching the video, I was able to program it after the first try.

Homelink System Installation

1. Park either inside the garage or have your car parked on driveway facing the garage as close as possible.

2. Press and hold the first and third button of the homelink buttons for approximately 20 seconds, until the red light starts blinking rapidly.

3. Press the button (1,2, or 3) you desire to have installed and hold it. The red light will be blinking slowly.

4. With the garage opener remote near the rear view mirror (1~4 inches near), press and hold the remote button while you are still holding the desired button on your homelink system. The red light will eventually blink rapidly. If so, release both buttons.

5. Next, go to the garage opener’s main console (it’s most likely the garage opener’s motor with the light turned on when opened/closed)

6. Search for a button that reads “learn”, “read”, or a noticeable button on your console. There aren’t a lot of buttons on that console, so you’ll most likely find it.

7. Press the button, and a light adjacent to the button will flash/blink. You have a 30 second window to finalize the installation.

8. Go back in the car, press and hold that button you desired to have installed and the light will blink rapidly for like 2 seconds and stop blinking (light will be on). Release the button and press/hold again. Repeat this two more times (A total of THREE times) and voila! The garage door will open/close!

Troubleshooting:

If you are stuck on number 4, try putting the garage opener remote near the 3 homelink buttons (1~4 inches). Try different angles of the remote if still does not work.

If you are stuck on number 6, where you can’t find ANY button on your console, you might have to open up the console and it will be there. I have a Genie brand garage opener and couldn’t find a button, so I gently spread open slightly between the light bulb cover and the console. Then the button was visible! So I got a flat-head screw driver, pressed the button and the light right next to it started flashing.

Interesting.

I had to do all the PIA procedure stuff to program the homelink on our 2010 Volvo but our 2012 BMW programed just fine with only the remote. Same garage door opener so I guess the BMW homelink is smarter???

still no luck, i am wondering if this problem is specific to the fact that I don't have the original garage door opener?

yes that is THE problem. It was driving me insane and I tried it with the original door opener and it worked.

I've successfully programed three different cars with Homelink....all on garage door openers with rolling codes.My sister's Honda,my "d" and my Bluetec.Although I tried to follow instructions closely I feel that a certain amount of luck was involved in all three efforts.You need two people,a sturdy ladder,a plan of attack and,perhaps,some luck.IIRC the first attempt to set up all three cars failed so perseverance is needed as well.If you have a remote that consistantly opens the door then,IMO,the fact that it's not the *original* probably isn't a factor.

I found the instructions on the Homelink site very accurate and simple for my rolling code openers.

Would you believe it though... my 2013 528xi doesn't have that LED. When I press the 1 and 3 buttons, I don't see anything!! Even after a minute. What to do??

Yes, i know it took me 2 crazy weeks and the last step is the key... But i see one issue with it, the original door openers can be pressed pretty far and the door opens, but the one's in the car we need to be on the drive way to have it opened..

any thoughts..

The OP instructions worked very well for me. In many years of owning Benzs and BMWs, I was always frustrated by this. Many thanks!

Try borrowing an extra remote from a friend or neighbor. Program one of the three buttons on that remote with the garage door opener. You should then be able to use that remote to program Homelink on your car.
