Rack part number 82 71 0 443 424

3rd bike option (does not work) 82 71 0 307 770
Please would you explain why the 3rd bike option does not work?

Just took delivery of a 2011 X3 and so far, accessories are limited for the new X3. I love the design of this bumper mounted bike rack and was wondering if someone could measure the distance between mounting points on the X5.

Hope they offer this option for the new X3 soon.

BMW just jacked up the price of the rack from ridiculous to ludicrous recently.
Btw I bought one when it was ridiculous

It measures 41.5" between the two points. I bought mine maybe a month ago for 425 from my dealer. It was listed then at 500. Now I believe the price has gone up.

Thanks for the measurement. Unfortunately, it's much too wide to fit the new X3..........baaaaa.........hope BMW develops one to fit.

hitch mount

I had a hitch installed and purchased the bmw swingaway hitch from a bmw dealership on Ebay (only 275 compared to 425 list price - they have since raised to 300). Anyway, the swing away hitch is great. Carries up to 4 bikes, is very solid, has retractable locking cables and a locking pin for hitch. I believe it is made by thule. Anwyay, it definitely cost me more to install hitch and buy rack - total cost ~600 plus tax. Fortunately they didnt cut my sensors when installing the hitch. My SA recommended a local hitch company to install and they did great.

installation kit required?

I would like to buy this rack for my husband's birthday. Looks like the price is up to $621! Do I need to buy the installation kit ($63.50) as well? My husband has every tool imaginable, but not sure if the kit as other parts that are needed.

The picture of the bike rack at pacific bmw looks different from the pictures that mbjarz originally posted. It sits way high up in the back.

Picture looks different but part number is the same as what OP posted. Even description mentions it goes into the rear tow hooks. If you still have doubts contact them or buy elsewhere for more $.

I just bought this rack. I spent about 10minutes taking it out of the box and messing around with it. The construction seems great and once I get used to it, it should be very easy to use. I'm planning to test it out this weekend.

Can the bikes scratch the bumper when driving due to shaking?

I ended up buying this from our local dealer, shelling out over $700, but I wanted to make sure it was here for my hubby's birthday, which was yesterday. He was thrilled with it and is going to try it tomorrow. Will let you know how it works out.

This rack does not shake. The bike tires fit into their own slots which keep them from moving, and the bike is held in tightly by a hard plastic strap. It's very sturdy and works great. The only complaint I've heard is that the backup beeper goes off when backing up with the rack on. But just push the sensor button to off and all is well. Not a big deal to me. It's a great rack!

I got rid of the X5 because it kept eating batteries, and failed to start multiple times...The rack is honestly nice enough that I considered just dealing with the X5's issues so I could still use it

I still have the rack, so I'm selling my rack on the bay atm. Auction ends next week, current bid is $1.25 (+$75 shipping)

I posted in the classifieds: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=579865

i have this bike rack, too. it works flawlessly... i can install and remove it myself w/in 5 minutes. we went hiking on the AT this past weekend and left the bikes on the X5, since you can lock them. i have put my road bikes and mountain bikes on them, and it handles both very well. you push a button and the thing slides down so you can open the tailgate.

p.s. don't pay for installation. you can do it yourself ... very easily.

The guy just searches the forum for the word hitch, and then spams the forum with his company URL. Doesn't even bother to read the thread to see if what he is posting is relevant

He did it in this thread too http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...90&postcount=6

I'm interested in the 3rd bike extender, but this thread mentions that it doesn't work. Does anyone have it or know what the problem is? 82-71-0-307-770

I really like this option. I'm hoping there is one for the F25 X3. Would anyone know if this'll work on my car or if there's a similar option?

Thanks in advance.

See posts #27 to 30 above. They discuss compatibility (or lack of, rather) with the X3.

Thanks for the reply, Marwan. Yes, I saw those but it's been over a year since, that's why I posted again.
