Why is the BMW F30 larger than the E92?

It has not gained weight, and the "girth" as you call it is minor overall.

Not a lot of rain but huge wind, trees and branches flying. The F30 is safe inside the garage, the kids are in the basement, have a hotel reservation tomorrow in case we lose power for a extended period.

We are getting clobbered here in McLean VA, I am totally amazed we still have power. My neighborhood's power lines are buried but around us are not. Same as you BJ, cars are in the garage, family in the basement. We never had power be out for more than a few hours so here is to hoping if it goes out it will not last days.

Depending on how you interpret it, either the nose has grown, or the nose has been punched

So far so good. I am in an area of Manhattan that will not be in danger from a storm surge. The cars are safely parked in the garage which is in the basement of the building. I can hear the wind but we have not gotten a lot of rain,

They needed to sell more cars in Texas. With the great majority of vehicles being big SUV, pick-up trucks, etc., previous 3 series looked like dinky, overpriced and out of place cars. Great move by BMW management! PS - Ex E46 owner!

Like the new 991 Porsche, I suspect the larger dimension is to accomodate the batteries in the F30 hybrid?

For me e90 is a perfect size (and I am not a small person ). F30 is too big. 1 is too small. Growing in size is a negative side of a competition, so they can say mine(BMW ) is bigger than yours (Audi for example ).
I always thought there is no need to grow in size from generation to generation. There are 5 and 7 for those in need.

Funny, but no. The problem is that it's an arms race. I owned a 2006 Mini CooperS convertible and the car was awesome -- responsive, nimble, and fun! But in the land of SUVs and ~5,000 lb cars, it was a death trap. The Mini was only 2,500 lbs which means in an accident with a 5,000 lb SUV the Mini absorbs 2X the energy. Unfortunately, my decisions are not independent of everyone else's decisions. (Economists call this a negative externality.)
Currently I drive a 2006 X3 and I'll definitely consider a new X1 if it ever comes in manual. My fallback is a VW GTI in a few years. I loved my old E46-generation 330Ci convertible, but living in Seattle with a convertible was kind of silly.

Anyway, back on topic...
