Diagnostic tool for our e34?

When I owned my Audi S6 I used my Vag-Com to control options on the car and do other things. One cool thing too was that we had a forum that listed who had a vag-com and what they wanted for the use of the tool - like a case of beer for you to stop over and use the tool on your car.
I'm not concerned about resetting service lights on the 525i.
Does a tool like the peake-research R5-FCX-3 tool show anymore codes that the stomp test will show?
What are you folks using for your e34?
TIA
P.S. I am counting down the minutes till Friday 3:30 PM EST when I go pick up the 525i

Don't have anything to read an OBDI system but it would be cool to have a network where you could go use the tool, bring a case of beer, chit chat.

I have that tool. It works pretty good for reading and clearing codes as well as oil life and srs light. It's a good tool to have. It comes with a decent size book for all the codes as well.

E34's have a variety of diagnostic plugs (2 at least). Starting in Dec 1994 the DME's changed to the "coded" type that make replacement a dealer item.
Mine has the round plug under the hood where you can reset the oil/service indicator with a jumper. I doubt this car has much else to read other than what a locally bought reader will do.
It only has one O2 sensor vs 4 in the newer cars. Really a simple car considering it has motronic control.

I'm in Yorktown Heights and am picking up the car this afternoon in Staten Island. I'll be on Staten Island for the weekend and then head back home Sunday around 1PM.

on my 1990 there is plenty to read beside the idiot lights. there is the zke, dme, abs, etc that is read thru the dme. the obd II plug started in 1996 by federal mandate and that is a standardized plug. the round one is in all models 1988 thru 1995. the only one i have seen that did not have the large round plug was a 1988 m5 which i am told that they were all built in 1986 and 1987 before the change over to the large round plug. you are not that far away if you want we could try to get together and run the carsoft on your car. i am across the river in orange county.

I have it on good authority that carsoft sucks and is not worth paying for. Having tried it myself, I can only agree. Ediabas/inpa is what you want. Else there are the GTR1 systems available out there with the access kits and all. Not cheap, and requires a stupid old laptop that has a COM port, adaptors will not work. Grrrrr !!

roberto you got bad info. carsoft is about as good as it gets. that being said, i bought a reconditioned laptop with the exact configurations that it requires. this computer is a tool and therefore is not ever plugged into the internet or used for any other purpose. most of the complaints i have heard is related to the downloading of the software. if it is operated as designed on compatible equipment it works very well. this is not heresay this is actual use and would be happy to demonstrate to the haters.

in the interest of fairness and to base our assumptions on fact, during the holidays robertv and i will try to hook up and carsoft his e34. his should be an unbiased assessment of the this tool and its capabilities. sound good? ps i just checked carsofts site and the kit is now $295.00. $100.00 less than what i paid for it last spring, not including the laptop.

Gentelman,

Its fairly simple, OBDI compatible interface from Ebay (search for ADS capable devices).

Then you need to go googeling/downloading something called EASYDIS from www.bmwecu.org.

I know full well that bmwecu.org does not allow new membership on the site, and I really battled with that, but there are rapidshare sources where you can get EASYDIS.

I cannot go into specifics due to copyright and so forth, but all of the details are on the web.

You can have OEM style diagnostics on your E34, which will beat anything that anybody else can put out there...

I have a dedicated laptop for my E34. I downloaded Carsoft and it failed to work at all. The next download was corrupt. Can anyone give me a secure download address please?

use the CD that should have come with it. I have a CD here but im not sure how to do filesharing on the internets so i cant give you it sorry!

also carsoft v6.5 has been out for years and is the most reliable for the older cars. I think it was realeased in 2006 or so because it can only read BMWs up to that age, but that doesnt matter for you or I. make sure you get the BMW specific one

I am game for starting some kinda list like that. I recently ordered my penske tool and anyone in the Greater Grand Rapids area (MI) is welcome to meet up and get there car scanned. Seems like the least I could do for my fellow BMW owners.
