how hot has your 325 gotten?

So as I was jump starting someones car, my 325 was running long and the tank popped. By the time the car was off it was creeping up to 3/4. Ive never had this one up that high. Im waiting for a new tank to come in but in the meantime it seems as though its running just the same with no issues. Anyone else hit that temp lately? Results?

Hmmm... 3/4 of the way isn't good, I'll tell you that. The gauge may have read 3/4 to the red, but due to the huge buffer, the actual engine temp was considerably hotter than what the gauge indicated. Cross your fingers and hope that the head wasn't warped, etc.

My OEM gauge got up to 3/4th one time when I was idling with neither of my fans on by accident, and my prosport water temp gauge (sender on outstream of thermostat) read 224, which is pretty hot but I don't think hot enough to boil being pressurized and also having anti freeze in it. My headgasket and head are fine.

Hitting 3/4 once for a minute on a freak thing like that isn't going to damage anything.

Had a couple of 3/4 guage readings on the 328 and so far I had no head gasket or head warping problems.
But I will agree that it is something that must rather be prevented.

I've recently acquired a 98 328i! And the individual I got it from ran it hot for a considerable length of time! He ran it hot for so long it shut off! What I'm getting at is how or what could you look at or signs or symptoms would the car display if you warped the head or blew a head gasket!! When i started to look at the car i notice the clutch fan Has went out and there isn't any signs or symptoms of oil in the water or vice versus!I've recently since I've obtained the car and done the following!! I've replaced all the following on the car! All oem parts and everything torqued to specs!! New water pump, thermostat, fan clutch, flushed the radiator and blew out the all the coils in the radiator oil cooler, and the a/c condenser, water pump pulley to an aluminum one! And new dex-cool antifreeze with a 40/60 ratio, and pennzoil platinum full synthetic 5w-30 and k&n oil filter!! What else do I need to do since this is my first BMW car I've owned!!! And thanks ahead for all the info and answers!!! Q-T***302;P

If the previous owner ran the car until it shut off, and you knew that, why did you buy it? I hope you are incredibly lucky and the engine has no damage, but it will be just short of a miracle if it survived unscathed.

How many miles does the radiator have on it? If it's over about 70K, you need to replace it, too. Before you do anything else, get the cylinders compression and leakdown tested, just to confirm that the engine isn't hurt.

Welcome to the fest!

Do you raise exclamation points in somewhereville? Because you seem to have an abundance of them that you can use them at the end of every sentence.

I only paid the man 500 bucks for and the body is perfect and interior is average so yeah even if I have to replace the motor in this senerio then that will be fine because I'll have only around 3-3500 in the car ya dig!! But I drove it today and it ran fine just shortly after it began to run hot and I loosened the bleed screw to see if it had any air in the system and it continued to bubble and after I filled it back up ran fine! But what gets me is that there is no steam coming from the exhaust and it doesn't miss at all and runs great, also the oil isn't milky or fluid doesn't have any oil in it either!!! Turn the key and it starts right up!!! SMH don't know what it could be! Plan on doing a compression check in the morning and check the coolant level too

Hello everyone!

I am somewhat new to bimmerfest, since I have only been reading the posts, instead of contributing.
My car is a 94 325is, on which I did an S52 engine and tranny swap, along with a 3.38 differential. I also kept my m50 manifold. My other mods include underdrive pulleys, Borla exhaust, and 3.5 intake and HFM, topped off with a Turner chip tuned to these specs.
The car is running almost perfect, only issue is with the zf tranny. With all the research I had to do for the engine swap, I did not bother to look at the transmission, and I ended up with one that has a sticky 5th and reverse problem. Hope to solve it soon.
Otherwise she rides on Bilstein BTS suspension with Powerflex bushings, and stock brakes.

Sorry, the forum asked for an initial post as an introduction.
I had my radiator "neck" break off at one time, and the temp shot up to the red. I live in florida, and this happened in the spring months, so the temps were up there.
At the time I did not know a whole lot about bimmers, so I fixed the problem with superglue, topped off the water, and drove to my destination (a few hours away). But I never experienced any issues with the head warping, or any other problems due to the temp gauge rising high. I drove the car with that engine for another 8 years. (until the s52 swap)

well thank the creator all is well after the overheat! Only casualty is one blown inverter and a decimated headlight housing. Thats cool though as they were homemade and im ordering some depots this week. Once again Bmw trumps all. Thanks for the input fellas.
