Serious front tire wobble
Have a 2002 325CI. While my wife was driving back from Florida, the car developed a violent front right tire wobble/vibration. Had car towed home. Changed tire and no change. Looked online and noted common problem with control arm bushings. Looked at my front bushing and it was definitely shot. Ordered a polyurethane set and replaced - absolutely no change.
With the car jacked up, I can feel perhaps the slightest play in the tire - but very little - certainly nothing that should cause the car to feel to feel like the tire is about to fall off at 5 mph. It may be bearings but when I try to move the tire by grabbing at the 12 and 6 o'clock position - I get no movement. While I was able to replace the control arm bushings without too much problem, I am unfamiliar with steering components in general and not the most experienced mechanic. If anyone has any suggestions on something that may be fairly simple to check /replace I would greatly appreciate it. |

Thanks Tanner T
I actually broke down and took it to a Firestone shop this morning and am I embarrassed !
I said I wasn't that great of a mechanic and that's an understatement. The tread on the back side of the rear tire had separated and was causing the "tire about to fall off " feel. I am amazed that it didn't go flat after I looked at it. it was also just on the inside and not readily visible. The car was vibrating so badly I really thought it was the front tire - plus that's what the tow truck driver said. Oh well - the control arm bushings needed replaced anyway. Also greatly enjoyed your handle pic so that's a positive - thanks. |
