Fuel smell
Out for a ride today and when the passenger window is down we can smell fuel and yes the gas cap was on

Our Z3 will also do that on a fresh fill up and shortly afterwards,replaced the fuel cap with no difference.Going to check the return lines when I have some spare time.Not completly filling it seems to make it less of an issue.When I actually find it I will post the fix.

I had the same problem last week after a fill up. I pulled the gas cap, cleaned around the gasket. Also cleaned all the surfaces around the fill pipe where gas may have dripped from the gas pump hose.
No smell after that. I don't know if it was the rubber gasket on the cap not sealing completely or some gas residue around the filler pipe but it's gone now. BK85

Fuel smell
Same problem with mine, have found if I fill the tank slowly the gas does not surge back out of the tank and end up puddling in the plastic/rubber boot below the filler neck. Have also used some paper towels below filler neck to catch any overflow when filling, then wipe out any excess gas. No smell this way so far.
