E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Timing chain broke on 120d

Hi, i have just been told that the timing chain has broken or slipped on my 2007 (57) 120d M sport 83k.
N47 D20A engine code
The options I have been given are not great. Pay 300 to have head removed and see how much damage been done, if not too bad it will cost 2000, if lot of damage then a replacement exchange engine at 2995 +vat and fitting, poss 4500. Or an engine from BMW 6000.
What should I do, the car is only worth 8500.
I have looked on eBay and there a few sellers offering a fitted engine for between 1595 and 1995.
Are these likely to be ok?
Please help.

You may have resolved the problem with your timing chain by now, but just to let you know I had the same problem for my 1Series 180d. I contacted BMW direct and they gave me 100% parts and the garage reduced their labour by 15 (about 20) per hour. This was out of warranty, but only had 54000 miles and was 2007. It still cost 1850 but that was still a lot less than you were quoting.

Suggest you try your luck with BMW and see what they will offer. From reading other websites, I have come to the conclusion that there is a fault in the crankshaft which causes the timing chain to go. Have you ever heard that?
