E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

Massive coolant leak but where from?
Hello there! I have just bought an e30 (my first BMW!!) I checked all the fluids took it for a drive and it ran great and everything checked out. But the other day on my drive I took off the coolant filler cap to put some more in and loads of coolant started running out from underneath the engine. The leak has slowed now but I cannot find where it is coming from, all the hoses look and feel good as do the clamps and the leak is coming from somewhere between the engine and the fan. I managed to get my iphone in to take a video, can anyone think where this is coming from, do I need a new water pump and gasket? Any advice would be great as I would like this car to be back on the road before the snow starts ideally...
youtube /watch?v=t-GFTqdWiSs&feature Thanks! |

Here's the video. Your link didn't work, even copying everything after /........ (talking to OP)
That's coming from either the thermostat housing or the water pump. My guess is water pump. Replace the cam drive belt while you're in there.

No, that's the front crank pulley and timing pulse ring.

Quite possible. Feel under it with your hand. Also check with torch and mirror. Any leak that big cannot hide.

I'd strongly suspect the water pump.
It would be easy to spot if it was coming out under pressure from the thermostat flange. m |

My expansion tank on my E46 spang a leak and it was gushing alot when the engine was on and hot, slowed when engine was cold and when pressure was low.
