E70 X5 Spare Tire

Hello to all forum members. I am new to this site so please forgive me if this has already been posted.

Has anyone built their own spare tire package for their E70? What size rims and tires were you able to fit in the rear compartment (under the trunk floor space)? I do not want to buy the ugly steel rimmed space saver spare that BMW sells. Also, what kind/brand of jack did you purchase?

Thanks

Sorry but you have few options. The compartment is not really THAT wide to allow anything much different than the OEM spare. Yes, it's ugly but it will be living 99% of it's life under that cover so there really is not reason to spend $500 on different parts IMHO. However, if you DO find something that works, post it on here for others to see.

Why not? its just a spare!

On my M5, I carry a single full side tire/wheel in the trunk along with a E39 jack. But there is no space for even a space saver in that car.

Actually, having a spare wheel that matches my E70 would be an OK idea, just in case. I usually retain one old tire with the best tread when I get new tires- having a wheel 'in stock' back at the house might be a good idea. (So you can take off the space saver and give tirerack a few days to ship the replacemnet.) I'd still keep the space saver in the trunk.

Again, consider you may never even LOOK at it for years on end!

Yeap, I would also advise you to just stick with stock spare - unless you're planning to drive several days on spare (which is not a good idea) the "ugly" stock one is perfectly fine. There's no shame in letting others know that you had an accidental tire puncture. It's not like you accidentally wet your pants or anything like this

Spare Tire

I realize you may never need to see or use the ugly space saver spare, but I am just wondering if I can pick up an inexpensive but more visually appealing alloy wheel and wider tire at Tirerack for less than what the stealerships want - $350?

Get a space saver from your local BMW/Euro auto wrecking yard, along with the jack etc. Probably only pay about one third of what the dealer would want. Sadly there will be lots of that kind of stuff around now with all the flooded high end iron left in Sandy's wake.

Hi
We do have the OEM Spare in stock but yes, the price is pretty up there unfortunately, BMW does charge us a lot for the components

The OEM spare will fit in the compartment (no 3rd row seat). Other wider non OEM ones will probably not fit in the compartment

Anyway, if interested, do check out

http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...T-E70-KIT.html

Like I mentioned, we do have a few left in stock, no need to wait for the BMW backorder.

Thanks

A bit high compared to a few others but it looks like they have FREE shipping "for most orders over $150" so it's not too bad. I've bought air filters from them before.

Hey guys

I ordered the steel wheel/rim from getbmwparts yesterday, but I can't find someone to supply the 155/90 18 tire.

There aren't too many posts on the forum specifically mentioning where they purchased the tire.

I tried dealer, Tirerack and American Discount tire so far. None stock this size.

Suggestions?

What other tire size would fit the 5J 18 rim to give a 29inch rolling diameter?

I also only just found the link to the supplier of the wheel and rim kit for $295.
http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...T-E70-KIT.html

If I go that route, suggestions on getting rid of the new wheel that's already on its way?? getbmwparts will not do returns per their shipping policy.

Oh, and my local dealer refused to accept that a donut wheel existed for the X5, so I sent him the part number and he questioned how I could use an 18inch wheel on a car with 20s..

Thanks

Update: They do accept returns, since its just the wheel, not wheel/tire?

Yeah I have 3rd row and spare is a must for me considering that I ski a lot, and tow truck is NOT going to come to pick me up if I screw up RFT and wheel during blizzard in the Rockies.

The bimmerzone kit does not appear to have the wheel chock that the one at bavarian autosport has. Is this correct?

We do not have the wheel chock as one is not called out for the X5, but we will be happy to supply one for you if you like

And if you truly like Alloy over Steel spare rim, there is an X5M Alloy spare: http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...-E70M-KIT.html

Rolling diameter is 28.8 vesus the Steel wheel/tire's 29in; so less than 1% difference. The alloy is MUCH lighter than the steel rim.

I bought one pretty cheap off of Ebay, so you might check there.

I haven't had a chance to actually need/try it. And the only question crossing my mind in hindsight is the bore diameter. E70 X5 has 74.1mm bore all around. X5M has, I believe, 74.1 front and 72.56mm rear. So not entirely sure how a single spare can fit both. Maybe it's at the larger 74.1 bore size, and being a spare and limited to a reasonable speed, is OK enough to be used on the X5M rear and centered just by lug bolts. Anyone know on this??? (Bimmerzone?)

Hi
Yes, the one for the X5M is 74mm up front and 72.5mm at the rear. The X5M spare is 74mm and its used on the rear as well, once you have one lug on, the rest are easy.
