auxiliary fan will not stop running

I have a 2002 330ci and my front auxiliary fan will not stop running. The only time it stops running is when the battery is unplugged or when I disconnect the wires from the fan. Today I replaced the water temp sensor and it still runs all the time.

Sounds like the relay is bad.

Is the relay where all the wires from the fan go. Square looking thing?

Seeing as how it only shuts off when he disconnects the battery, I'm going to guess he's talking about the auxiliary electric fan.

To cool down the car when it gets hotter than normal.

You need that thing running properly.

I think you identified it yourself.. the small box that all of the wires from the fan run into. A unit located right on/near the fan.

Mein Auto:
or a bad temp sensor. disconnect the sensor to see if the fan stops. check the resistance across the temp sensor when it is hot (use a hair dryer) and at room temp. Manual trans doesn't have the aux fan.

That was my next guess. the temp readout in the dash reads exactly halfway all the time. And the fan I was refering to is the electric one that is just behind the radiator. I should be paying for the rest of the car either today or tomorrow so I'll be able to tinker more. The dealer said the fan wont turn off so they unplugged the fan. Don't remember if that same connector somehow runs to the temp sensor or not, but if not that was my guess too. Thanks for the reply

Where exactly is the sensor. My auxiliary fan will not stop either. I put on a trickle charger and the fan immediately starts up again. I just want to get it to the shop.

I would definitely say sensor before relay. relays can go bad buts its rare. I know the relays are problematic on the keyless but that's more of a surface mount solder connection problem. either way. pulling the relay would tell u what's wrong. if you pull it and it clicks. that tells you its the sensor. if its frozen it will not click. then replace the relay
