650i Oil usage

We had a hot summer - for Minnesota. I think we had a week or 10 days streak above 100, and then most of the days high 80s or low 90s. Of course this does not compare to the South - curious how other northern owners are doing. I suspect the oil level was probably at the top when I picked up the car, so I think there is some loss. All my other cars were V4 or V6, never had to add up oil between changes.

At 9600 miles, my 6er asked for a quart today, the second time since taking delivery.

I've have one that asked for oil at 1500 miles. My latest waited until 9500. Nothing is wrong with them. I hate to use the word 'normal', but that's normal for these 8 cylinder motors.

I just added a 2nd quart at 6,000 miles.

Not unusual for this motor.

Our F10 550 has just under 2000 miles and needed the first quart last week. SA said it's normal for turbo V8s. Usually drive on Sport+ and mostly street driving during the week. I heard street driving burns more oil than on the freeway. Is this true?

Not sure. I do almost exclusively city driving in Sport mode, and I made it about 5200 miles before needing to top off the oil. I have a feeling that ongoing to need to add more before I get to 10,400 miles as I'm approaching the low level right now.

Yes.

I need a quart every 4-5k miles on both 7 and 6. They told me to buy Castrol 5w 30 synthetic. and its normal

Just added my second quart since delivery: first time at 5200 miles and second time at 7750 miles. I went ahead and bought an extra quart to keep around since it appears that I'm going through oil at a faster rate than I thought - difference of 2550 miles.

It's time to change your oil if have not done it before!

If you were to sell your car privately, serious buyers will be critical when you had changed the oil. You should also think to have your differential fluid changed, too.

I understand that most of your driving is short-distance urban.

Yup. They changed my M's oil approximately halfway between the computer's signal. They wouldn't reset it on these changes. Taking 8 liters of 10W-60 synthetic, I'm glad they covered it under routine maintenance.

I needed the first quart in my 6er at about 4500 miles. I just drove into the service lane of my nearby dealership, they poured one in, and I drove out. No need to stock up at home. It is not unusual for a high revving twin turbo V8 to consume a quart of oil every 4~5k. Any more seems a little excessive, but it depends on one's driving habits. Keeping it in Sport mode all the time (Southy) keeps the revs up, so I would expect a bit more oil consumption.

I certainly wouldn't sweat it.

When did you/are you going to change your 650i's oil?

This thread could easily turn into another oil discussion as it is a topic of considerable dispute. So I'll just leave it at this: I am going to stick with the BMW schedule.
