Rim cracked found :(
I have these 20s tsw wheels and one of them has a crack on it. Is it possible that there is a diy fix before i try looking around for a rim shop? The crack did not go all the way threw only visible on the inside part but not the outside part. Is it a diy thing?

Hi,
There are specialist places which will weld up wheels that have had damage like this so you'll need to search one of those places out and ensure they're a reputable outfit rather than some cowboy backstreet type place. TSW wheels are branded and are of higher quality than unbranded replica's out there, and are stronger. However, once a wheel is damaged like this, it means structurally it's weakened and although you can weld the crack up, the strength of the metal around the crack is compromised. There's been reports where people who have welded cracks like this will sooner or later find the wheel will crack further away from the recently welded part. It's up to you really, try it and see how you go, if you can't find anyone reputable then perhaps sell the other 3 wheels off as spares and get yourself a new set of wheels. 20's on an E39 need to be strong wheels due to the very small tyre all ratio of the tyres. Any road potholes and undulations that are big enough will transmit the 'forces' right through the tyre directly to the wheel and if it's a 'weaker' or 'lower' quality wheel - like you have in this case, you will be much more susceptible to bends and cracks - as you've found out. If you are ok with that, stay with 20's, if not, I'd say drop down to 19's or 18's. Cheers, Dennis! |

Hi Lalaray!
I seem to recall you are running replica wheels, right?! if so, that's probably the reason why they've cracked relatively/so easily. Get some high quality wheels on that car! cheers, Dennis! |
