Removing resonator in 550i

I was thinking about doing a minor exhaust mod to my 550 by just removing the resonators and putting a straight pipe through. As anybody done this? Does it improve the sound any?

Did you ever try this and what was the outcome?

Removing resonator in 550i

I removed the front most resonators just passed the cat. I left the box shaped one in the rear to cut down on drone. Sounds great but I also swapped mufflers with an OEM M5. I'll have to upload a sound clip. Not sure you'll hear much of a difference outside of the car, maybe a little more throaty inside the car with just removing some resonators. If you can find an OEM M5 muffler do it!! The vacuum works just like the 550's and it sounds like it should've from the factory. A lot more beefy but not annoying. Quiet at cruising speeds and throaty and mean when you get on it.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm assuming you're referring to resonators just behind the downpipes then? Did you get to test the exhaust note after the resonator delete, and prior to swapping with the M5 mufflers? Was there a difference? Do you have drone now? I will prefer to keep the 550i rectangular tips.

Yes and yes. The M5 mufflers had a more definitive growl vs the stock 550's. I have zero drone whatsoever. Absolutely love this setup.

No drone. My inspiration for the vinyl wrap job was from another member here. Actually bought his Vossen rims. Maybe you bought his car? Mufflers were I think around $500 for whole OEM M5 catback system but I just used the mufflers. Installation was another $300. Still beats the price of an Eisenmann system. The badges are carbon fiber pieces. Kinda cheap Chinese crap from online. They fade quickly and warp. Think I'll put the factory rounders in with vinyl overlays instead. Can't beat factory quality.

Thats a nice looking car! Congrats!
I got the car from the brother of a member in this forum. I am not sure what his user name. He just told me his brother was all over the forums back when we made the deal. How did you know?

Thanks for the picks. I just ordered some vinyl and I am going to overlay it on top of the handles, badges, etc.

I'll keep an eye on the muffler. What is a budgetary number for the overall wrapping of the car in Vinyl?

The wrap was around $2k. Supposedly lasts 3-4 years if u take care of it. I've had it on since January with no issues. Parking sensors work perfectly even covered up. My car is originally black so I left the roof and mirrors alone. Great contrast. Trunk spoiler, fender indicators , handle inserts and lower rear bumper are all gloss black. I figure the wrap is great paint protecting and I don't have to worry about keeping a black car clean all the time and no scratches!!! Really easy to clean, u can even take it to the car wash. Just don't wax it like paint. You use half/half alcohol and water for any hard stains or dead bugs and finish with Meguires quick detailed wax.

Thank you. I had it done by a professional shop. Just so happened they were doing Chris Browns Lambo Aventador so that made me more confident when I dropped it off. Wrapping takes patience and there's definitely the right way to do it. For small parts you could do it yourself but I wouldn't trust myself to do my whole car. I would probably waste so much material. Also I suggest only using the 3M stuff. It's thicker and lasts longer. Mine is 1080 Matte Grey.
