Did you do any recent work on your transmission? Oil change...anything ?

If this code appeared out of nowhere, it may be a ghost. That happens.

1. Check for any oil leaks. Ideally, do this at a workshop (the undercarriage inspection enables you to check many things so its well worth it), or look at the driveway for oil patches. If there are leaks, get them fixed and top up oil as necessary. Follow the Bentley manual's instructions on oil levels here. Download the E34 bentley manual (google for links) for details.

2. Check for error codes using the stomp test. Youtube and google has the info on how to get the stomp test to work. Other websites have the interpretation for the codes.

3. Clean your tps, buggy ones can create transmission/engine related faults :

4. Note any codes, then delete them all. The transprog message and gearbox lock will be released. Restart the car and drive and monitor for the next few days. Drive hard on occasion.

6. If the error message recurs, it is time to take FF's advice. In that scenario, go to more than 1 shop and correlate their opinions before you decide what to do. We can help you prioritise at that stage if you wish.

7. Transmission issues are generally in the province of trained experts. There is very little wiggle room for diyers here. Since trained experts often differ in interpreting things, its best to get more than one opinion, if they prove necessary. And it is possible for a suitable tranny expert to fix certain transmission issues with a computer alone, so if you have to visit them, please do so with an open mind.

Please update your thread when the problem is fixed.

rgds,
Roberto

Anothing thing you should do, OP. Unclamp the TCM (transmission control module) along with the ecu for a few minutes, if unclamping your ecu alone does not reset the gearbox. The tcm is located right next to the ecu in the same ecu box. Your abs ecu is located there as well, fyi.
