98 740 il lifter problems plz help i think I been screwed.

Im a noob to mechanics so any advise is deeply appreciated. First I started having problems with my timing chain tensioner. So i brought it to a mechanic and he fix the timing chain tensioner and now he saying my lifters are having problem. He never told me anything about the lifter or did I ever have any lifter problems prior to the tensioner problems. I brought my car to three mechanic and none of them ever mention any lifter problems. I changed the oil full synthetic with some lucas to see if the problem will fix but i think its actually getting worst. If I remember I was having a noise come from the left side of the engine and now i can hear a noise coming from both sides now. Also the mechanic is telling me to buy a oil pump because he says my oil pressure isnt right or low and that he checked it. My car is not indicating me no oil problems on the dash. Like wouldnt my car let me know? thanks in advance.

Oil pressure light comes on at 5-7psi. If you are getting the light on at any time after start-up you have MAJOR problems. Low oil pressure reported - quantify: 20psi 30psi? Shop talk is cheap - data is gold. I cannot give a qualified answer on exactly what pressure is 'normal' as I do not have a manual covering that engine, so you will need to research that. Reports of low oil pressure and 'noise' is never a good sign. Can you quantify oil pressure independently (hire/borrow a gauge)?

I had an annoying knock\tap in my engine as well after doing some surgery on it. I followed the bleeding procedure listed below that Joy speaks pasted. Problem solved. Took a few times doing it, but eventually completely gone...

My car has 174,000 miles on it. im goi.g to ask the mechanic how he tested the oil pressure I dought its that. My lifters were fine till he touched it. Thanks guys

Did you attempt the bleeding procedure described in the post Joy listed.

No tools needed for that other than you foot and about 15 minutes or so.. This is what corrected my problem was the bleeding procedure...

Yes I tryed it. Its still making the noise it sounds like its coming from both sides of the motor.

Ill do it tommorow. I started it up today and the noise went away but when I took it for a ride it came back.

So as It turned out it wasnt the lifters it was still the Timing chain tensioners, left side passenger side. I brought it back to the mechanic too see if he can fix it. Very skeptical of this guy but seeing that I paid him already. Can someone plz tell me briefly on how to fix the tensioner on the left side. how this has to be done. Thanks Bimmerfest

As I understand it on that motor the timing chain tensioner is a cheap and easy part to replace - you could do it yourself basically. Have a read here;

Pass. side tensioner and tensioner (usually is the main one) are 2 diff. things. You should ask that mechanic witch one is he talking about***********:
-The secondary chain tensioner of the pass side? (around 21 hours worth of labor). http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...65&hg=11&fg=25
-The main chain tensioner on the driver side? (less than an hour labor, as described in the link above).

I took these two pictures when he first started working on it. I know its the left side because you can feel it hitting on the left side.when you put your hand on it. Im so stressed out about this im starting to think this mechanic dont know what hes doing. I been with out a car for more than a month. I feel like just parting it out and just try to get some of my money back and buy a toyota lol. To fix that left tensioner.you have to take the whole nose off right?

Its the passenger side. You can feel it slapping when you put your hand on it.I took these two pic the first time he worked on it. I think this mechanic is clueless. Im about to tell him to give me my money back or punch in the face. I been without.a car for more than a month spending 20 bucks on cabs to get home. I went from driving a bmw to riding the bus.

Yes that's the pass. side. You might get away with the main tensioner ($70?) and a little time. The changing procedure is listed above by somebody else. Easy fix I should say.
Unfortunately, you are not the only one that has been fulled by not knowledgeable mechanics. This is nothing comparing with other things that I saw or read on this forum. Punching him in the face might not bring you any positive other than short satisfaction. Heads up and move forward. Just think that could be even worse.

Joyism thank you so much for your help. Things just been difficult on my end. Im working pay check to pay check and I.feel like all these mechanics want.to just rape me because I have a bmw. Lil do they.know im just a average guy who.works doing security for 9 bucks a hr. But thank you for your help.

Unfortunately, I think that your situation is even worse than you initially thought. From watching the video couple times, and even pause it at the 17sec mark I can clearly see that your U shape timing chain guide has no plastic on it at all. It can be clearly heard the sound of the screwdriver metal to metal. The plastic part of your timing guide collapsed and felt into your oil pan, and the ticking what you hear is the timing chain slapping into the timing cover. I might be wrong, to make sure, remove the lower oil pan and inspect for plastic pieces.
If you run the engine again you might ruin it. You need a timing job ASAP on that engine .Your U shape guide looks like the one listed here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1633366

Thank you Joy for your fast reply this whole thing has me sick to my stomach. Now I have to ask myself if its worth fix or just parting out. To do this job the whole front of the car has to come out??. And how much you think im looking at in parts? And thanks again you been more of a help then my mechanic.

Timing guides are 3 plus some sliding pieces for the tensioners $250-$300 for all.
Timing tensioners are 3, one for the main chain $48, and 2 for the secondary chains $140 both.
Some gaskets, less than $100.
Parts are $500-$600 and labor depends on the shop. Call around. This job requires BMW special tools for timing which can be bought or rented for $350? The job does not require front end of the car to come down, but radiator, alternator, steering pump, water pump assembly, valve covers, all 3 timing covers...
