Keyless Entry on E34's
Anyone know when Keyless entry was introduced to the E34?
I have an 89 model but when I bought the car the old lady only gave me a manual key to open the doors with. Was just wondering if only certain models came with keyless entry or if they all came with it or if it was introduced later down the line. Any input is appreciated.

I don't think the 89 models had keyless entry

Only E34s I had or serviced had key-less. Bulky infra-red with limited range.

All have central locking, but only very late ones had keyless entry, and it was an option on everything except 540i. Though USA may be different?

My 95 with Premium Package came with an RF keyless fob. The receiver/control lives under the rear seat. I'd be surprised if it couldn't easily be added to any E34 with central locking (ie all of them).

get the united auto security kit for keyless entry. I've got it on my 94 530i without factory keyless entry (only central locking) and it works pretty well, even though the range sucks. It comes with 2 keys that you can take to a auto locksmith to cut or you can pay UAS to cut them for you.

My 90 525i came with keyless entry remotes, but they don't work so I just assumed it was broken and didn't care enough to look into it.

Simple checks and fixes for non-operational fob
If it has a fob for the remote, open it up and:
1. Make certain that the chip in the fob is properly seated in the connector. They can come loose and even fall out over time. 2. Put in a new battery if the led does not light brightly. I have found that the led may light with a weak battery, but the remote won't work. 3. Make sure the fob and car are synced up. This involves opening the alarm module and inserting the chip from the fob into the module socket. The procedure is well documented and you should be able to find it. |
