ac belt with auto trans - do i have to remove fan?
I just need to replace the ac belt, can I replace the ac belt without taking the fan shroud out and fan off?

I think, if I remember, if you do it from the bottom up, it's possible to change without removing the fan and housing. But if you go top down, the fan has to come out.
That being said, I did buy the fan clutch tools from ebay. They were cheap, some form of cheap chrome plating - and they work. You might want to think about getting a set. I've had to pull the fan and the housing off 3 or 4 times since I've owned the car. The wrenches came in handy, and makes changing belts a very easy think to do. For my 530i, I replaced the AC belt from bottom two months ago. I believe you can do it for an E46 too. I think you need a T40 to loose the AC tensioner.
