E60 / E61 (2004 - 2010)
BMW 5-Series E60 Sedan was first seen in the Unites States in the fall of 2003 with a 2004 Model Year designation. The E61 wagon followed shortly there after. The E60/E61 5 series is now available as a 528i, 528xi, 535i, 535xi, 550i and a 535xi sports wagon! -- View the E60 Wiki

iDrive upgrade/swap? Possible?

I have a 2004 E60, 530i with the 6.6 inch screen CCC I drive system. It is the basic I drive system for 2004, it is wired for CD changer but does not have one installed. Does not have Bluetooth module for I phone compatibility installed.

I have seen on several occasions where people are selling I drive systems that are upgraded from my version. The larger screen, Bluetooth modules, and CD changers. Are these I drive systems interchangeable with my car? Can I replace my I drive system with this I drive system? And if so, is it just a matter of pulling out the old hard drive system and plugging in the new one? Or do I need to have BMW recode and I drive system for this car?

It is very much possible to upgrade to the CIC system.

They can pre-code your cars VIN then it's pretty much plug and play.

Here's another video, but this is old and all the equipment (including iDrive knob) comes with the kit:
