$75 Oil Change Special?

Have a special at my local bmw dealer. Is it a good deal? Also hoe often is oil change recommended by BMW of North America? I have a 2008 535xi. Thanks guys.

That's not a good deal. That's a standard price. I have an 08 535xi too. Oil changes come every 15k miles depending upon how you drive. The car constantly recalibrates itself. Drive like a maniac you'll change it more often.

Well I put about 250 miles on my car every week. And I drive normally. Is it done every service due? Also when its time would it be easy to just buy the oil from the dealer and get it done at a indy shop?

There is a separate meter that calculates it. Just tap idrive and navigate a lil bit and you'll see how many miles you have left. It has nothing to do with the service due. It'll specifically say "oil" and the miles you have left. Why go to an Indy shop? At $75 every 15k you spend less over the course of a year anyway. Might as well have the pros do it.

For that price get it done at the dealer - synthetic oil is not cheap. The car should have an oil change every 15K according to BMW - to me that is way too long. I have been getting oil changes every 7,500 miles.

5k-7k is good

$75 for an oil change!? Damn you big states are lucky.. I have to go 45 minutes for a BMW stealership and they get $129 for it.

That's a good deal. Our dealership charges around $120.00 for oil changes and consequently why I do it myself! The next nearest dealership (Pensacola) charges $100.00. I'd jump on $75.00 given full synthetic is so expensive. BTW, my car states 16k miles between oil changes but I'm changing every 12k mi. We're pretty easy on our vehicles with mostly interstate driving.

It's not a bad price for a dealer but if you're into very simple DIY you can do it by yourself using top notch oil and OE or OEM filter. Cheaper and better results.

how exactly is it "better results"? i know the guys in my shop and they do excellent work.

Well, I can't speak for your dealership, but some BMW dealership tech damaged the oil drain plug threads on our car at some point in it's history. When the warranty ran out I began servicing the car myself but was always leery of the drain pan threads. They felt damaged or soft to me from the beginning. Sure enough, what few threads had actually been holding gave way on my last oil change. I had to re-tap the hole and install a HeliCoil.

I also just discovered our lug nuts were significantly over torqued, having had new tires put on recently, by another tech (not BMW). Those are supposed to be torgued around 85lbs but had to be over 150lbs. In fact, I had to buy a larger air gun to break those loose but still have three in the back which won't give. They'll be getting a call today about that.

I think what UltimateDriving is saying is, these are issues which would have been avoided by a competent self servicing car owner who has a vested interest.

So my idrive system says oil change in 5k miles. If I change my oil before those 5k miles come up. Will my idrive pick that up automatically and reset?

That would be nice but the answer is "No". You have to do the following steps to reset service components.

1) Turn the car to "on" but do not start.
2) Press and hold the odometer button until the maintenance symbols are displayed.

This can be kinda tricky sometimes, so just keep trying until the symbols show. If some maintenance code numbers begin to display, seems to happen after numerous attempts, just turn the car off and try a little later.

FYI, you can go into the I-drive to see what the symbols stand for in needed. Start from the main I-Drive window, push the knob down (as if selecting "I") then; Info Sources>Service Information>Service Requirements

3) Scroll through the maintenance symbols by pushing the odometer button.
4) When the desired maintenance symbol is highlighted, push and hold the odometer button until it prompts you to "Reset". Press and release the odometer button again to ok that. You have to go through each individual service component as such, but this is how it is done...

I just got a similar coupon in the mail from my local dealer. In small print at the bottom were the words "synthetic oil extra, limited to 5 quarts". Is there a BMW built in the last 10 years that doesn't require synthetic oil? And, I know my car takes way more than 5 quarts.

The "coupon" went in the trash!!

If you can actually get it done for $75 that's a pretty good deal. I change the oil myself and it's almost $55 just for materials:

7 quarts of M1 0w40 @ $6.50 / quart: $45
Mann filter: $8.50

Easy DIY by the way. It's easier on an E39 because you can use an oil extractor through the dipstick tube - no need to get under the car. But I digress... Don't want to open that can of worms...
