2013 X5 or X6 50i guys. What is your MPG?

For the 2012/2013 X5 or X6 50i guys/gals:
Just curious because I have a few buddies on and off the boards with M Performance X5's and X6 50i's that are getting some aweful MPG including myself. I understand that if I was interested in MPG I shouldve bought a 6 cylinder or diesel, or heck I shoudlve looked into Prius. LOL So, just for the record I am a performance junky and willing to accept the fact that I am going to get completely horrible MPG. But, when I thought it would be horrible I had no idea to the extent of how horrible it would be.

What I need from you guys is to give me some MPG figures that you guys have been getting mostly city miles in your 50i big motor X's. Thanks fellas.

I am averaging 9.6 MPG's after the first two fill ups. This is with 95% city driving in and out of traffic on the long island expressway. With about 3 three gear full rpm blasts up to 80mph or so per tankful. The rest is completely casual (non spirited driving).

I am only getting around 190 to 220 miles to the entire tank on a fill up. (this is not by any electronic metering, this is done by me calculating the fill up gallons at the gas station divided by miles driven. The gas mileage is so bad that after a fill up I can literally WATCH the needle go down as I drive. I actually noticed this on my first drive back from the dealer with the car and I thought it was odd. But I attributed it to maybe them not giving me a full tank. Oh lord was I wrong. I am almost about to say this is not acceptable but I wont because its aperformance car and thats what I paid for. For comparison, my old 2002 4.6is would get about 315 miles to every fill up and this was with stop light to stop light spirited driving in the city. So, this is a huge difference. I also am coming from a 620 rwhp mustang cobra with a 21 lb whipple supercharged motor and i still got 300 miles per fill up. So, this is scary compared to my prior experience.

When I actually tried to get better MPG and I drove in D for a full tank, never going higher than 2900 rpm, I kid you not for the entire tank. I managed about 11.6 MPG with ZERO spirited accelerations at all. Seeing how the regular 50i is rated at 14 MPG conservative and the X6 is rated at 13 MPG, I am assuming the 440 hp M Package might drop it to around 13 or so. But 9.6 MPG average over 500 miles is scaring me. Any feedback?

Sorry for the long read fellas.

Dom

PS- forgot to add. If I am driving in D , 8th gear on a highway at 65 mph for around 30 mintues, the MPG goes up to about 24 for pure highway miles. Which I am assuming is great.

90% of my driving is "in-town" in my 2013 X5 50i with M Sport and M Performance. To date I am getting on average 12.9 mpg. As you pointed out, anytime I am on the highway at a consistent 70 - 80 mph, I am getting around 24 mpg. For me, the growl of the engine and the pin my backside in the seat feel that I get is worth the reduction of mpg.

Dom, as you might have read in other posts, I'm getting MPGs in the 7s around town, if I'm lucky. But I'm sure my car has an issue, based on the symptoms it's displaying. Black exhaust residue that it's spitting all over my bumper, the gunpowder/sulfur exhaust smell and the fact that the electric cooling fans are always on during city driving trying to cool the car. Have another appointment scheduled with the dealer. The rating on the sticker is the same 14/20 as the non Performance Pak version. I had high performance cars my whole life. High powered small block Chevys in a similar weight car getting gas mileage twice as good. My friend with a 5.0 X6 is getting 13.9 MPGs on the same streets. My neighbor had a 2012 5.0 X6, her mileage is almost twice as good and her tips are clean. It got destroyed in the storm. She just got 5.0 Performance Pak X6 to replace it with. I don't yet know how well/poor its doing. If the performance pak is making the car run rich to get a bit more power, it's certainly not worth it and the drastically decreased mileage is not advertised anywhere. I'm considering contacting an attorney about a class action suit, if my problems are not addressed at the next dealer visit. My third. Already filled a complaint with the NHTSA. I suggest you guys do the same. I love BMW, I went through four HPFP failures in my 535 including one that resulted in a crash and still stuck with them for my next two cars, but the complete lack of responsibility and the responses to my recent complaints are making me reconsider my options.

Here is a link to file a complaint. How else are they going to get the message.

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

An acceptable solution to me would be to have the performance pack programing removed and reverted to regular tuning if it will fix the rich running condition and yield better mileage. Naturally with the refund of the purchase price for the Performance Pak.

My Man Dom....... how u doin?? So you’re familiar with high HP huh?? I wasn’t, this is the most HP I´ve ever had. So is Dinan ready to sell you a stage 2 yet? Are you still thinking about the Dinan upgrade?

About your poor gas mileage.....11.6 MPG with no spirited driving is bad. I would think something is wrong. As you know, I have stage 2 and I average 20mpg on the highway and 15 to 16 mpg in town. I play with the power sometimes, mostly on the interstate and sometimes while city driving, not too often though. Everyone’s driving habits are different, but I believe you should be getting better mileage than that. Are you carrying extra weight in the cargo area? Are your friends seeing about the same mileage as you? How many miles on your X now?

My overall for mixed in town and highway is 18.5. Even when I spend several days in Madison or Milwaukee, I don't see less than 250 mi/ tank.

Guys...I am considering an x5 5.0 or x5M. Are you guys seriously getting 7-12mpg? I am not sure I can stomach that kind of consumption.

After three tanks of gas I'm at 17.5 for mixed C/H for a 2013 50i with the PP. I suspect it'll get a little better as the engine breaks in. My 2010 M5 averages 15.8 after 60,000 miles. At least the tank is a little bigger so I don't have to fill up every other day.

Ugh...that is really dismal fuel economy coming from the 335d that pulls down 24-26 city and 34 highway. Even the 535 pulls down 20-22 city and 26-28 highway. I really want the 5.0, but I am not feeling that gas consumption. I drive so much I could literally drain the tank in one day of weekend driving around South Florida.

I considered the Diesel, but couldn't get Carbon Black or M-Sport. That made the choice a little easier. If you are looking for 24mpg you should look at the D. But I gotta tell you, I drove one for a weekend and never got a giant grin on my face like I did after 5 minutes in my 50i.

The wife gets consistently 12-14 mpg with 95% in town driving. On the highway 80mph gets you 17-18 if you are nice to it

Guys thanks so much for all the responses. I am so sorry for not responding sooner but it has been crazy at my stores for the holiday season now. Give me a day or so for detailed responses but its not good news. I have had a chance for a few fill ups and its still terrible. Also has a rotten eggs gasoline smell when idling , it comes in the cabin when windows open. Many people notice the smell and say something. I think I am going to have some local Indy put tailpipe sniffers in it or plug the o2 sensors with a/f readers to get some live air fuel pulls on the highway when loading the motor. I am almost positive she is running rich.

You have a brand new 2013 BMW which you jus spent 70-80k for. Don't go to an Indy shop. Take it to the dealership and make sure it gets taken care of. If it was a 2007, yes go to an Indy but not a 2013.

I agree. Take it to a dealer that will take of it for you. If they don't, find one that is interested in keeping you as a future customer.

Ditto, but I am 90% conservative on the throttle and 10% fun time...which is always worth it.

Everyone's driving habits vary with some people on/off the pedals so much while others do a good job of hovering and coasting into upcoming stoplights. Hard to compare sometimes.

I get around 17-18mpg avg in my 50i with Dinan stage 1...works out to about 375 miles per avg tank (max of 425). Overall it is much better than the M I had previously which got around 13mpg on a good day and had a range of a little over 200 miles per tank.

Not to rub it in but high 400s and low 500s are typical on my d in everyday driving. My educated guess on your situation is a leaky turbo. In addition try changing your fuel provider to name brand premium. Also when driving coast more and break less. Cant hurt to run some fuel injector cleaner through the system. I would occasionally run the idea through my head of swapping to the 8cyl but after reading this no way.
Good luck.

Guys thank you so much for the advice. You are right, after spending about 80k on this brand new vehicle I should definitely take it back to the dealer. My honest opinion why I hate going to the dealer. The dealer ALWAYS fuggs everything up. No matter when or where I take my new cars , by the time I get it back the paint is chipped, scratched, the rims s have new dings, Ect. You guys all know what im talking about with this. I tend to only go to dealer when it's completely necessary. I feel the service techs just either don't give a **** about your car or are jealous. But it is getting so bad I need to take it in. I have 74 miles on the trip meter and just about down to half a tank. This is horrible

what!!! This is my first BMW and my service so far has been excellent. My previous car was a lexus, and there service was excellent. I never had scratches, dings, or anything of that nature after getting my car back. That is totaly unacceptable with PREMIUM cars. Now i have gotten my ford, camry and honda back with things you mentioned, but never my PREMIUM cars.

Turbo - how you doin man??? hope all is well.
Dont know why you are surprised. We have had a brand new 745LI, 2002 X5 4.6is, 2011 x5 35, and a 328xi, including my new car over the years. Even if we take it in for a simple service or oil change something usually happens. We have used two dealerships over the years. I wont mention any names. The most recent mishap was with my last 2002 X5 4.6is. I took it in for new lifters and to get cam timing adjusted and matched to ECU. The car was perfect when it came in. When I got it back, car had the entire front left wheel with a huge deep gash and oil/grease stains on the wheel where they obviously smashed it into something. That was only a few months ago. Wont mention any names.

Even more recent was delivery of my new car. Not only did I take delivery of the 2013 X5 50i with a gash on one of the wheels (stupid me didnt notice when I picked it up, day of hurricane sandy). #2 the biggest thing was we ordered the X5 WITH NO FRONT LICENSE PLATE BRACKET. I made sure the salesman wrote this ALL OVER our paperwork. Well, what do you know, I took delivery of the car with holes in my bumper and the front plate bracket installed.

These are only a few examples Turbo. But, my family and friends in NY for the most part always have minor issues with service. No one is impeccable about what they do anymore. People used to take pride in their work. That is usually not the case anymore.

hey man thanks again for your response. Just wondering what you meant by 3mpg at 1/4 tank. I am averaging about 9.6 MPG overall on the entire 600 miles from brand new. My best 50/50 mileage so far was 11.6. I would say my tank is 67% full right now and I have 74 miles on the trip. It is a 22.5 gallon tank BTW.

I think that your nearly exclusive "in city" driving is impacting your individual results. You have to realize that BMW did NOT run the fuel performance measurements using the sport/non-auto option. Rather, any comparisons should be based on keeping the car in AUTO 100% of the time. Any time you change it to the manual shift alternative, you can basically kiss 2-5MPG in fuel economy away.

In order to get an idea of what your truck will actually do you may want to figure out a way to take it on a road trip for 50% of the tank and drive around town (conservatively) for the other half of the tank. Perhaps a nice EASY cruise to the mountains with a bit of piddling around the small towns shopping for do-dads that can fit in the back of the X5 would do you good. Then come back and let us know how it goes. I think that 12 to 13.5 are about as good as ANYONE gets with those for in city driving. Highway.. you will be lucky to get the top of 21MPG advertised. The 24MPG you are seeing is likely a periodic anomaly. My Diesel goes to 50MPG for long periods of time on the highway but I don't expect to see anywhere near that result in reality. 26MPG would be GREAT for my '12 X5 Diesel IMHO for a long highway run

I'm in the same situation, been to the dealer twice already for the same condition. The only thing they can do is hook it up to a computer and verify there are no codes. I tried going through BMW customer relations to get the Regional rep involved in diagnosing the issue. After almost two weeks of communication I was denied that request because the only way to get help from a regional rep is if the dealer is asking for it.

The car is definitely running rich, it's obvious. How can they deny there is any issue just because it's not throwing codes and adaptations are within range.

Right now the car is at a third dealer for the third time, for that and a transmission issue it developed. I might have to pick it up before they get a chance to do all possible testing because I will be traveling out of the country, but I really hope I don't have to take it in for the forth time for them to at least diagnose it.

Going to an Indy shop might just be the ticket.
