Should I change the fuel filter at the same time as the oil filter?
Hi,
Just wondering if you suggest that we change the fuel filter at the same time as doing the oil & filter change on a 2006 X3 diesel? Looks like it's fairly easy to change at home, and hopefully we can reset the service interval following the directions listed here. Also any recommendation for the best oil/fuel filters available in Australia, but not buying through the dealer? Cheers Last edited by Brynderwyn; 11-19-2012 at 10:00 PM. Reason: additional info |

Fuel Filter does not need to be changed at the same time of a oil change. Recommended change for Fuel filter is between 50-60k miles. Oil change recommended between 5k-15k (heavily debated - I change mine every 7.5k and new filter in between changes)
As for buying oil/filters check online. A lot the places I use are in the US so I am not sure how much shipping would be to Australia.

Is that interval for a Diesel?

Oh Whoops I didn't see he had a Diesel. I am not sure if that is the recommended scheduled maintenance for a diesel. I could be wrong but changing the fuel filter at the same time the oil filter is changed would seem like a lot. No?

I change diesel filter every 40.000 kms (that would be on every fourth oil filter change). So far it worked ok for me. It is a 20 minute job at home.

Where is fuel filter on gasoline models (2006) and how do you change it?

Brian, double check with them if they are considering the right location of the filter in the x3. Even at $80 an hour, i wouldn't think that's a half hour job. You don't want any "surprises" after the job is done!
On Most other bimmers it's under the car and that would be about right the quote.

Funny you say that...because that is exactly what I said to him almost verbatim. His response was we have done so many of those with the e46 and e83 over the years that it really only takes 30 minutes even removing the seat and pulling it out of the tank.
