How easy is it to DIY replacing oil filter housing gasket?
I have a small oil leak coming from this common problem area on 2006 530i's.
Indy shop wants to charge $22 for gasket. $495 total to repair and do oil change. Sounds way too much if I can do it myself. Any suggestions? Thanks |

It's not that difficult to replace that gasket. It's pretty straightforward.

That may be a fair price for that repair block to pump .It can be very labor intensive, and in a a very tight area on the older bmws . Each year is a little different, lots of removal of other components on some years . . The e60 may be a easier repair?

Ill say the alternator does NOT have to be removed on the N52 engine.
Replace the oil filter housing gasket and the oil cooler gasket at the same time. To get all the bolts off of the actual filter housing it's easiest to unbolt the intake manifold and slide it back to access that lower torx bolt next to the alternator.

i did my 05 530i this past weekend along with the valve cover gasket. took me 3.5 hours. Valve cover was easier, m54 engine. Seems to me the car has lots of issues. Fuel pump tomorrow or saturday $350. Tired of one thing after another with this BMW. Not sure i would ever buy another!!!

It is very easy to do. You need a gallon of BMW coolant, an oil filter, oil, a 1/4"-drive E10 socket, u-joint and 8" long extension. You do not need to remove the inlet manifold. Wait to do the job at the next oil change.
Here is a DIY- diy-do-yourself-14/oil-filter-housing-gaskets-replacement I bought the socket a Snap-on for $12. You need to use a 1/4" drive socket and u-joint. Alternatively, you can use a 12-point Gearwrench 5/16" ratcheting wrench and a 12-point 5/16" socket. Last edited by txag_530i; 11-16-2012 at 07:16 AM. |

Is there a check list of other things I need to do to keep this job simple? My last car I used a app that took me step by step when I changed an oil pan gasket on my 95 Buick Riviera. Was the only way I oils cover all things.

If you don't feel comfortable attempting this job, I suggest you take it to someone who can do this without an issue. A lot of jobs on these cars require some searching in order to get people's feedback on what went or could go wrong. I say the purchasing of a Bentley Manual should be in order if the confidence level isn't there. If not, take it to an Indy.

I just finished writing a DIY for the M54 E60, if that helps at all.
