i3 photos from New York
Autoblog Green posted a series of Photos from BMW's road show. They appear to be pre-production prototype parts.
These are more interesting to me than outside of the concept car.
The i3 is rear engine, rear drive. To be technically correct, I should use electric machine, as the it is both a motor and a generator.
The box with the orange connectors is the power converter. The electric machine is behind and below it. Transaxle is just to the right. The battery pack is behind and below all of that.
The i3 is going to have an optional range extender. Rumours are the motor might be a modified BMW motorcycle engine. There is room for the range extender either here in the back or under the front hood.
This front subframe looks beefy enough to hold the range extender. On the other hand it doesn't look like the real subframe. The electric steering unit looks similar to but not the same as the EPS unit from a MINI. This could be the real part and derived from the R56.
This bmw power train is smaller than the 2nd Generation Renault 5A going into the Zoe. The stack used by Renault includes the battery charger. Maybe the BMW charger is elsewhere?
The models and equipment (standard and optional) illustrated in this post reflect my misunderstanding of vehicles supplied by BMW AG to the German market. In other EU member states, the truthyness of my posts may vary. Please ignore this post. Subject to change.
