Auto Heating

Have a bit of a ghost problem in heating system. Occassionally the heat turns to ambiant outside air, Calgary in winter, and will stay in this mode regardless of what buttons are pressed. When you stop or slow down heat comes back on in a few minutes. Engine coolant gauge is right where it should be throughout. Many valves and sensors to chase.
Anyone have any clues or similar experience?
