transmission problem

I have a 1998 328i with automatic transmission..basically wont shift out of 1st, but sometimes in 2nd with encourgement, no 3rd. tried in auto and manual...no codes.....any ideals I could try...fluid is fine...

150,000..wouldnt it show some codes

Not necessarily, You said the fluid was fine, Was it changed at all?

There are only a few faults in the auto tranny that will generate the transmission failure light on your dash. There are more codes however that are stored in the transmission computer that will not show up on the OBDII data port connector. The dealer and some indie shops have the code reader for the transmission. By the way, the transmission is supposed to not shift when you select the M position. That position tells the tranny to stay in the gear you have selected.

you are correct on the manual part, ok in first in manual and 2nd also with some encourgement and no 3rd in manual just like when in auto..anything else you could suggest...

'Fluid is fine'. How fine? Is it bright red? Are you checking it hot with the engine running?

Could be a blockage in the valve body. Chances are that the tranny is gone.

Dude, that transmission is knackered.
