That's too far fetched for consideration Beej. Disqualified.
First they take away the dipstick and flashlight and nobody hollers, then the spare tire and jack go on extended vacation, and nobody bats an eye. Other content slowly disappears and there's hardly a ripple.
Then they take away two cylinders and hope we all continue to buy the "less is more" line. Sorry, everyone but the F30 victims realizes that "less is less". Even you in your heart of hearts (not that I'm sure that I could have used that expression with the old boltjames, but it seems OK for boltjaM3s 2.0) realize what you've left behind. That's why you come back here, because it's home, and like the slightly off color uncle at Christmas dinner, we like you to visit because you make it interesting. Even if you're somewhat delusional and prone to think you're living on the edge when you've actually gone and fallen off the cliff.

The number of cylinders is just that- a number. In the real world, the new 328i puts down more power and more torque than the old 328i and it's lighter weight leads to a more nimble feel and it's a more exciting car to drive.

As for the flashlight and other things they took away, consider the things they added. Now every car gets the following as standard:

-iDrive system with 6.5" LCD
-Bluetooth handsfree system
-Premium audio system
-iPod integration and adapter
-Additional USB and 12v adapters
-Auto dimming exterior mirrors
-Auto dimming rearview mirror
-Universal garage door opener
-Power seats w/memory
-Split & fold down rear seats

Compared to the NA 6 in the E90 328i, the Turbo 4 in the F30 328i makes more HP, higher torque, and lower weight. So for the same money, we get a more powerful car with better performance and oodles of comfort and tech features.

That car is very close in dimension to my E39.

I thought 3 series cars were supposed to be small and sporty.

The 3 isn't the same price as it was with the e9x. It's base price has increased. The 4-banger also sounds like a diesel. The difference in HP is minimal. There has been an increase of 10 hp compared to the outgoing I6. A simple exhaust or intake would fix that. DSX forgot to mention the biggest flaw, they took away the hydraulic steering and replaced it with electric steering.
