2004 X3 Needs New DME?

I've been told my X3 needs a new DME. The computer that controls the engine.
The repair is $2,089.
Part: $1503
Labor inc programing: $525

Does anyone have any experience with this? And once its replaced is it a precursor to future problems?

I have heard of DME failures in the past but it isn't a common problem with the x3. Most failures that I have read about have been from modded 3 series.

Now with that said anything is possible. What issues lead to that diagnosis? What codes were thrown by the scanner? Has the car been in an accident where airbags have been deployed or has the car been modified?

Based on your other post I would lean toward battery first. However like I said I have read other DME failures and they do look like battery issues at first and can be misdiagnosed....so my take is at this age of vehicle...check battery first unless you have recently replaced it.

I am seeing similar issues with my 2005 X3 3.0i and am recommended DME replacement, here are the codes-
2869, 28B2, 27A1 and 2796, related to service bulletin 12-49-06
Other codes are 2830 and 3C1F

The battery is replaced about a month back. Any advice is much appreciated.

aside from the codes, what other symptoms does DME failure produce? ie... engine sudden shut off while driving with no warning?

Hello, I am having a similar issue with my 2004 X3 3.0 where engine will stall at low speeds. When running cruise control at high speeds, there will be a surge causing cruise control to turn off but car will still run.

I have already changed the Idle Control Valve but issue is still happening. Now am being told to change the DME/ECU unit. But before I do that, wanted to find out if there might be any other causes before I pump more money an unnecessary repair.
