523i Engine Stuttering at Start-up

I have a 2003 E39 523i and it has developed a strange engine problem.

The car starts easily but stutter and I have to rev the engine in neutral for 20 sec before I can drive. At speed the cars feel normal, but when taking off from a full stop it "jerks" and I have to give it more than normal gas to get it going.

I live in a warm climate, so it is not a winter engine start problem.

I have had the spark plugs and the camshaft timing sensor replaced, but still the same.

The "on board" computer is saying that the spark coils are normal and no other faults are reported.

What could it be?
Fuel filter was replaced at the last oil change. Could it be the fuel pump, but why then running normal at speed?

Thanks a lot for the link and yes it could be a faulty vanos, my symptoms are somewhat similar.

Still my car runs at a steady idle. Is there any way of diagnostic if it really is the vanos?

Yes, if the car has more than 60k miles on it, the seals are likely shot.

I am finally out of the woods and my Bimmer is driving like a dream again.

As it turned it out, the VANON was not at fault, but it took some dignostic over a week to locate the problem. In short here is what happened:

1. Exhaust oxygen sensor was showing low voltage and it was correctly identified that the DISA had a leaking diaphragm. The DISA was replaced ($300) and the engine was running better at high speed, but still had the cold start problem.

2. Check Fuel pump pressure (50 psi - OK), clean fuel filter and fuel injectors (Free), but still had the same cold start problem.

3. Replace the Air Mass Meter ($700) and viola, the engine is running like new again. Smooth, lots of power and absolute no stutter. Happy driving again.

I had the same problem on cold starts with my 535i v8. (think baby 540i engine) It also turned out to be the MAF sensor. A brand new Bosch one only cost me 160 euros though. This problem will throw a MAF code.,, so that is how I figured out my issue. Always best to read codes and go from there.
